What is a Chemical Reaction?

It is a chemical change in which one
or more substances are destroyed
and one or more new substances
are created.

Chemical Reaction

Chemical Reaction, a process in which

one or more substances, the reactants,
are converted to one or more different
substances, the products. Substances
are either chemical elements or
compounds. A chemical reaction
rearranges the constituent atoms of
the reactants to create different
substances as products.

Recognizing Chemical Reactions

How can you tell if a chemical reaction is
taking place? There are four visual clues
that indicate that a chemical reaction is
likely occurring.

1. A change of color occurs during the

reaction.
2. A gas is produced during the
reaction.
3. A solid product called a precipitate
is produced in the reaction.
4. A transfer of energy occurs as a
result of the reac.
Chemical Reaction

Why is it important to recognize chemical

reactions? Chemical reactions are the most important types
of events in the universe. It's through chemical
reactions that plants grow, produce fruit, and
become compost for new plants.

It's because of chemical reactions that human

beings (and all other animals) reproduce, digest,
grow, heal, and think.
Types of Reactions
A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances, the
reactants, undergo chemical transformation to form one or more different
substances, the products. It is a process that involves rearrangement of
the constituent atoms of the reactants to form products, without changing
the nuclei of the atoms.

CO2(g) + H2O(l) —> H2CO3(aq)

A physical reaction is different from a

chemical reaction. Physical changes
only involve the change of state.

H2O(l) —> H2O(s)

CO2(s) —> CO2(g)
