EXEMPLAR TEACHER CHARO M. GARCIA CODE 007

GRADE LEVEL: 8
GRADING PERIOD: FIRST
CONTENT STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of factors of polynomials, rational
algebraic expression, linear equations, and linear inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations and
inequalities in two variables.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner is able to formulate real life problems, involving factors of polynomials,
rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations
and inequalities and linear functions and solve these problems accurately using a variety of strategies.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
Factor general trinomial with leading coefficient of greater than 1. M8AL-Ia-b-1
Determine the factors of a polynomial by grouping. M8AL-Ia-b-1
TOPIC: FACTORING GENERAL TRINOMIAL WITH LEADING COEFFICIENT OF GREATER THAN 1
FACTORING BY GROUPING
NUMBER OF DAYS NEEDED: 4 DAYS

I. ACTIVITY
A. TRY AND TRY!!!!!
Give polynomials whose numerical coefficient of the leading term is not 1. Factor this using trial and
error method. Allow the students to stress out the disadvantages that they have encountered in using this
technique.

B. WE HAVE!!!!

II. ANALYSIS AND ABSTRACTION

F. FACTORING GENERAL TRINOMIAL WITH LEADING COEFFICIENT OF GREATER THAN 1.
acx2 + (ad + bc)x + bd = (ax + b) (cx + d)
Remember:
To factor trinomial with a>1 as the numerical coefficient term:
1. Find the product of the leading term and the last term.
2. Find the factors of the product of the leading term and the last term, whose sums up the middle
term.
3. Rewrite the trinomial as a four-term expression by replacing the middle term with the sum of the
factors.
4. Group terms with common factor.
5. Factor the groups using greatest common monomial factor.
6. Factor out common binomial factor and write the remaining factor as a sum or difference of the
common monomial factor.
Examples
Factor each completely.
1. 6z2 – 5z – 6 6. 15x2 + 19x - 10
2. 2k2 – 11k + 12 7. 18x2 – 3x - 10
3. 6h2 – h - 2 8. 2x2 + 11xy + 12y2
4. 3x2 + 2x −¿ 8 9. 7x2−¿ 23xy + 6y2
5. 6x2 + 13x + 6 10. 15x + xy −¿2y2
2

G. FACTORING BY GROUPING
ax + ay + cx + cy = (ax + cx) (ay + cy)
= x(a + c) + y(a + c)
= (a + c) (x + y)
Factoring by grouping can be facilitated by grouping together terms that have common factors, then factor.

Examples
Factor each completely.
1. 8mt – 12at – 10mh + 15ah
2. 18lv + 6le + 240v + 80e
3. m2 – 4m + mn – 4n
4. 12a3 – 9a2 + 20a – 15

III. ASSESSMENT
A. APPLICATION
Factor the following.
1. 7m2 + 6m – 1
2. 3k2 – 10k + 7
3. 5x2 – 14x + 8
4. 4wt + 2wh + 6it + 3ih
5. 15te – 12he + 10ty – 8hy

B. ASSIGNMENT
B.1 ENRICHMENT
Factor the following.
1. 2x2 – 3x – 5
2. 3n2 + 10n – 8
3. 10ti – 8ts – 15hi + 12hs
4. 88fo + 16ro – 99fm – 18rm
