Oral form of communication is an integral aspect in achieving understanding.

Its elements
which include intonation, pronunciation, diction and other aspects should be given emphasis in
order that message is channeled in such a manner that the listener will be able to grasp and
absorb the purpose over which oral communication has been established.

This form of communication is a primordial skill that leaders should possess and master.
Influence which is the essence of leadership is borne with effective communication, specifically
oral communication. Leaders are bound to communicate with their subordinates with clarity
and purpose in order to connect with deeper understanding. As leaders, it is essential to ensure
that the message is transferred in such a manner that it will not cause misinterpretation
otherwise, it will most likely cause confusion, miscommunication and other apparent
organizational problems. In these modern times, there are a lot of platform and modalities that
oral communication is being channeled by leaders. As I reflect that I wish to become a leader
myself, I surmise that the following are important areas that I should focus and develop in the
future.

Oral Communication in the Community

Oral communication of communities here in the Philippines is culturally bound. Over the stretch
of our history, we were colonized by various countries that has greatly shaped and influenced
over which oral communication is practiced by our local community leaders. As colonized by
the Spaniards, Filipinos were not usually given the opportunity to communicate to the
government on issues regarding various societal problems and issues that affect the lives of the
people because during that time, we were not entitled to that right. During the American
colonization, Filipinos were educated and there has been a transfer of learnings from the west
and included in it is the promotion and development of oral communication. Fast forward to or
modern times, oral communication has evolved as a means and a tool for community leaders to
effectively manage the affairs of their communities.

Oral Communication in the Academe

The academe is an arena for scholars, students and educators to promote a free exchange of
ideas. Oral communication is a very essential tool so that these people will ignite collaboration
and cultivate a culture of effective oral communication where understanding is the ultimate
goal. Without the skill of oral communication, this arena of higher education and learning will
not prosper and will cause stagnation and stunting of learning which is at the apex of purpose
over which students enter into academe.

Oral Communication in Governance and Politics

In the area of governance and politics, oral communication is pivotal. It could either make or
break a leader and a government. Oral communication is a vehicle and a tool for a modern
government to function as a steward for the promotion of the rights and welfare of its people.
If the leader of the government will not be able to effectively communicate with its people, it
will certainly promote chaos which will entirely affect the lives of many. Thus, a leader should
possess and utilize oral communication so that the interests of the people will be given
importance.

As a student and a future professional, I have to possess this skill because this will not only pave
the way for a better future, this is a life skill that is very essential for my existence. I have to
master and level up my oral communication skill so that I will be more competent as an
individual to face and be an instrument to promote understanding. It bears stressing that a
student and a professional who cannot properly and effectively communicate will be limited
with opportunities for growth and development. Further, since I hope to become a leader
myself, it is necessary to develop and master the skill and craft of effective oral communication
so that I will be able to inspire others and bring about the change that I want to see in my
community. The rise and fall of a person will be greatly influenced on how effectively he or she
communicates with others. Our community has proven time and again those who possess this
life skill is better prepared to confront the challenges that a person faces. Thus, students should
always endeavor to put premium in oral communication so that as he ventures to face the
challenges and difficulties in the future, this life skill is a very important arsenal to win in life.

To this end, this reflection on oral communication has taught me that I have to be more adept
and skilled in terms of oral communication because this will definitely be a big boost to myself
since I wish to become a leader in the career that I ought to have. I should not waver in my
commitment to improve in every opportunity that I have and I will have in the future.
