SOLUTIONS SCIENCE 7

You learned from module 2 about heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. One example
of homogeneous mixture is a solution. Solution is a mixture that has a uniform composition. In order
to produce this, two substances are being used: the solute and solvent.

SOLUTE + SOLVENT = SOLUTION

Solute is a component of a solution that is being dissolved, or usually present in smaller
amount. On the other hand, Solvent is a component of a solution that dissolves the solute and
usually greater in amount. To understand more all about this, we will have a simple illustration. Salt is
added to a glass of water.

Salt (SOLUTE) Water(SOLVENT) Saltwater(SOLUTION)

In this case, the water in the glass is the solvent, the salt (substance being dissolved) is the
solute and the result is called saltwater solution.

TRIVIA

Water can dissolve MANY

substances that is why it is
considered as “universal
solvent”.

The ability of a solid solute to be dissolved from a liquid solvent in a given solution is called
solubility. Salt can be dissolved in water; therefore, salt is soluble in water.

If a solution contains less amount of solute in a given amount of solvent leaving no traces of it,
we call it unsaturated solution. This simply means that the solvent can still dissolve more solute and
it forms a single phase. But as you increase the amount of solute in a given solution, there is a
tendency that not all solute will be dissolved completely. For instance, if you put 1/2 table spoon of
salt in a glass of water and stir, the salt granules will easily dissolve hence there are no traces of salt
found in the specific solution. But as you increase the amount of salt that is being mixed with water,
you can now visibly see the remaining salt granules that are undissolved, now we call it saturated
solution. This means the solution has reached a point in which no more solute can be dissolved.

Questions:
1. Based from the activity, what have you observed to the set-up as the amount of sugar
increases?
Answer: _____________________________________________________

2. How many tablespoons of sugar have you added until the sugar is no longer dissolved.? (This is
now the maximum amount of sugar that will completely dissolve in a half glass of water.) What do you think is the
solution formed?
Answer: _____________________________________________________
