CONCENTRATIONS OF SOLUTIONS
OVERVIEW

In Grade 6, you have learned about the different mixtures and their characteristics.
In this module, you will identify some important properties of solutions using different methods. You will
also learn how to report the amount of components in a given volume of solution.

What is a solution? Below are examples of common solutions you use or do at home. Name them. Write
your answer on the space provided.

In general, a solution has two types of components: the solute and the solvent. The solute and
the solvent dissolve in each other. The component present in small amount is called the solute. The
particles of solute are dissolved in a solution. Usually, the solvent is the component present in greater
amount.
Solutions are homogeneous mixtures. When you put sugar into water, the solid becomes part of
the liquid and cannot be seen. You can say that the sugar dissolves in water or the sugar is soluble in
water. Solutions maybe solids dissolved in liquids. There are also solutions where a gas is dissolved in
another gas, a liquid in another liquid or a solid in another solid. Gaseous, liquid, and solid solutions are all
around.
There is a maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a certain
temperature. This is called the solubility of the solute.
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved by a given amount of solvent is
called saturated solution. If you add more solute to the solvent, it will no longer dissolve and the solution
is super saturated. A solution is unsaturated when it contains less solute than the maximum amount it
can dissolve at a given temperature.
The concentration of solution is the proportion of the solute to the solvent. If there is a lot of solute
in a solution then it is concentrated. If there is a low amount of solute, then the solution is said to be
diluted.
When a light passes through a true solution, the dissolved particles are too small to deflect the
light. However, the dispersed particles of a colloid, being larger, do deflect light. The Tyndall effect is
scattering of visible light by colloidal particles.
Now that you have distinguished diluted from concentrated solutions qualitatively and quantitatively
from the previous activity, you can express concentration in other ways such as:

(1) Percent by volume, which is the amount of solute in a given volume of solution expressed as grams’
solute per 100 milliliter of solution (g/100mL) and

(2) Percent by mass, which is the amount of solute in a given mass of solvent expressed as grams’
solute per 100 grams of solution.
Example:
1. How many mL of ethyl alcohol is present in a 50 mL bottle of 70% alcohol solution?
Since the given is a 70% alcohol solution, it means that 100 mL of the alcohol solution contains
100 mL ethyl alcohol. So, the following calculations show that in 50 mL of alcohol, there is 35 mL ethyl
alcohol.
70 ml ethyl alcohol
50 mL alcohol solution X = 35 mL ethyl alcohol
100 ml of Alcohol Solution

First, multiply 50 to 70 and you will get 3500, then divide it by 100 and you will get 35 mL.

2. A one-peso coin has a mass of 5.4 grams. How many grams of copper in one peso coin containing
75% copper by mass?
75% by mass means 75 grams of copper in 100 grams of one peso coin. So, a 5.4 grams one peso coin contains,

75 gram copper
_________________ X 5.4-gram coin = 4.05 gram copper
100 gram coin

First, multiply 75 to 5.4 and will get 405, then divide it by 100 and you will get 4.05 grams.
Solve the problem below. Show your solution.

1. Sterling silver contains 95% silver. If a necklace made of sterling silver weighs 15 g,
what is the mass of silver dissolved in the necklace? Encircle the correct answer. (2 pts.)
a. 12.25 g b. 14.25 g c. 9.5 g d. 15.0 g

Three Thirsty Little Bears

The three little bears ate grasses, insects and porridge. They got thirsty after they
tried the porridge, so they decided to make some sugar water. To make their sugar water,
they created a solution: combination of two substances. The two parts of their solution are
the sugar (which is the solute) and the water (which is the solvent).
Each of the little bears had one cup of water. Mama Bear put one tablespoon of
sugar into her water to create a diluted solution. Baby Bear put two tablespoons of sugar in
his water. It tasted perfect – just the right amount of sugar. And as Baby Bear looked closer
at his solution, he realized all of the sugar had dissolved. Now, Papa Bear had a sweet
tooth, so he put four tablespoons of sugar in his water! It tasted very, very sweet. He put so
much sugar in his water that not all of it dissolved. When he looked at the bottom of his
glass, he noticed that the undissolved sugar settled to the bottom. No matter how much he
stirred his water, that sugar would not dissolve.
The three little bears observed that there is a maximum amount of solute that can be
dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature. This is called the solubility
of a solute. From their experience, they observed that there is a limit to the amount of
sugar that can be dissolved in a given amount of water.
