Lab # 14
Theory:
An induction motor (also known as an asynchronous motor) is a commonly used AC
electric motor.
In an induction motor, the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is
obtained via
Electromagnetic induction from the rotating magnetic field of the stator winding.
The rotor of an induction motor can be a squirrel cage rotor or wound type rotor.
Induction motors are referred to as ‘asynchronous motors’ because they operate at a
speed less than their synchronous speed
Apparatus:
Asynchronous motor
Connecting wire
Power supply
Measuring instruments (e.g Voltmeter , ammeter)
Procedure:
Take a Asynchronous machines and make the connection of the windings a desired
configuration
Connect the machine with power supply ( if Asynchronous motor )
Couple the machine with a prime mover ( if Asynchronous generator )
As we are considering Asynchronous motor in this lab , so connect it with the power
supply
Power on the supply
Note the value
The whole operation is shown in figure 1 and figure .2
