Objectives
• To analyze the accelerated motion of a particle using the equation of motion with different
coordinate systems.
hareketini analiz etmek)
Many of the earlier concepts about dynamics emerged after 1590, when Galileo experimented to
study the motions of pendulums and vertical bodies. The results from these experiments gave some
insight into the effects of forces exerted on bodies in motion. However, the general laws of motion
of a body subjected to forces were unknown until 1687, when the three fundamental laws of particle
motion were first presented by Isaac Newton. Newton's three laws of motion are as follows:
1) If the resultant force acting on an object is zero if the object is initially moving in a straight
direction, it continues to move or if the object stands at the beginning it continues to stop
2) If the resultant force acting on an object is not zero, the momentum change (momentum change
is called force) in the object will be proportional to the intensity of the resultant force and in the
direction of this resultant force.
𝑝⃗ = 𝑚𝑣⃗
𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂
The mass, 𝑚, mentioned in the second law is an invariant property of the object and its unit is kg.
The variable is the weight of the object. Weight is denoted by 𝑚𝑔, where g denotes gravitational
acceleration. This value has slight differences on earth and will vary according to the planet where
the object is located. Weight is a variable quantity, and its unit is:

Shortly after formulating his three laws of motion, Newton postulated a law governing the mutual
attraction between any two particles. In mathematical form, this law can be expressed as
𝑚1 𝑚2
𝐹=𝐺
𝑟2
𝐹: Force of attraction between the two particles (İki parçacık arasındaki çekim kuvveti)
𝐺: Universal constant of gravitation; according to experimental evidence (Evrensel çekim sabitidir,
yapılan deney sonuçlarına göre)
𝑚3
𝐺 = (66.73) ∗ 10−11
𝑘𝑔𝑠 2
Let's find the relation between the gravitational acceleration and the universal gravitational term
(Yerçekimi ivmesiyle evrensel çekim terimi arasındaki bağıntıyı bulalım).
𝑀𝑚
𝑚𝑔 = 𝐺
𝑅2
𝑀
𝑔=𝐺
𝑅2
𝑀 = 5.98 ∗ 1024 𝑘𝑔
𝑅 = 6370 𝑘𝑚
In fact, the g value is affected by the radius variations in different parts of the Earth and the rotation
of the Earth. As a standard, 9.81 𝑚⁄𝑠 2 is used for 𝑔 and this value is the value measured at the
earth's surface, at sea level and at 45° latitude.
In the SI system the mass of the body is specified in kilograms, and the weight must be calculated
using the above equation,
(SI birim sisteminde cismin kütlesi kilogram ve cismin ağırlığı yukarıdaki denklem kullanılarak)
𝑊 = 𝑚𝑔
As a result, a body of mass 1 kg has a weight of 9.81 N; a 2-kg body weighs 19.62 N; and so on.
The analysis of the motion of a particle is carried out in the following 4 stages.
(Noktasal bir cismin hareketinin analizi aşağıda belirtilen 4 aşamada gerçekleştirilir).
1) Firstly, a coordinate system suitable for the movement should be selected. This coordinate
system should either be a stationary coordinate system with an origin at a fixed point in space, or
it should be a coordinate system that makes translational motion in one direction with constant
velocity. Otherwise, errors may occur in the measurement of the acceleration value a. Since the
earth has rotational motion, a coordinate system fixed on the earth is not an appropriate choice of
coordinate system. However, since the angular rotation speed of the earth is very low, choosing
this coordinate system does not cause much error.
Aksi halde, a ivme değerinin ölçümünde
2) After choosing the coordinate system, what needs to be done is to draw a free body diagram for
each object, to determine all the forces acting on the object, and to equalize these forces to the force
called inertia force on the right side (as shown in the figure).
3) Then, for each coordinate, it should be written in the equation ∑ 𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂 by decomposing it into
its components.
4) Finally, by adding the restrictions arising from kinematics to these equations, the unknowns in
the equations are solved. Kinematic analysis was discussed in Chapter 1.
2.3. Equation of Motion for a System of Particles (Parçacık Sisteminin Hareket Denklemi)
The equation of motion will now be extended to include a system of particles isolated within an
enclosed region in space, as shown in Fig. a. In particular, there is no restriction in the way the
particles are connected, so the following analysis applies equally well to the motion of a solid,
liquid, or gas system.
At the instant considered, the arbitrary 𝑖-th particle, having a mass 𝑚𝑖 , is subjected to a system of
internal forces and a resultant external force. The internal force, represented symbolically as 𝒇𝑖 ,
is the resultant of all the forces the other particles exert on the 𝑖th particle. The resultant external
force 𝑭𝑖 represents, for example, the effect of gravitational, electrical, magnetic, or contact forces
between the 𝑖th particle and adjacent bodies or particles not included within the system.
The free-body and kinetic diagrams for the 𝑖th particle are shown in Fig. b. Applying the equation
of motion,
Hareket denkleminin
uygulanması),
∑ 𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂
𝑭𝑖 + 𝒇𝑖 = 𝑚𝑖 𝒂𝑖
When the equation of motion is applied to each of the other particles of the system, similar
equations will result. And, if all these equations are added together vectorially, we obtain
(Hareket denklemi sistemin diğer parçacıklarının her birine uygulandığında benzer denklemler
∑ 𝑭𝑖 + ∑ 𝒇𝑖 = ∑ 𝑚𝑖 𝒂𝑖
The summation of the internal forces, if carried out, will equal zero, since internal forces between
any two particles occur in equal but opposite collinear pairs. Consequently, only the sum of the
external forces will remain, and therefore the equation of motion, written for the system of particles,
becomes
∑ 𝑭 𝑖 = ∑ 𝑚 𝑖 𝒂𝑖
If 𝒓𝐺 is a position vector which locates the center of mass 𝐺 of the particles, Fig. a, then by
definition of the center of mass, 𝑚𝒓𝐺 = ∑ 𝑚𝑖 𝒓𝑖 , where 𝑚 = ∑ 𝑚𝑖 is the total mass of all the
particles. Differentiating this equation twice with respect to time, assuming that no mass is entering
or leaving the system, yields
𝑚𝒂𝐺 = ∑ 𝑚𝑖 𝒂𝑖
∑ 𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂𝐺
Hence, the sum of the external forces acting on the system of particles is equal to the total mass of
the particles times the acceleration of its center of mass 𝐺.

Solution (Çözüm)

We have N and F as unknown values. Thus, firstly solving Eq. 2 for 𝑁,substituting the result into
Eq. 1, we can find unknown F value.

The critical angle is determined by 𝜇. If there is no friction, 𝜇 = 0, and 𝜃 = 90. In such a case, the
motion will not be possible only when the force is applied in a vertical direction from above.
However, if there is friction, this value will decrease.

Tangential and Normal Forces. The most straightforward type of problem involving cylindrical
coordinates requires the determination of the resultant force components ∑ 𝐹𝑟 , ∑ 𝐹𝜃 , ∑ 𝐹𝑧 which
cause a particle to move with a known acceleration. If, however, the particle's accelerated motion
is not completely specified at the given instant, then some information regarding the directions or
magnitudes of the forces acting on the particle must be known or computed in order to solve Eqs.
*. For example, the force P causes the particle in below Fig a to move along a path 𝑟 = 𝑓(𝜃) . The
normal force N which the path exerts on the particle is always perpendicular to the tangent of the
path, whereas the frictional force F always acts along the tangent in the opposite direction of
motion. The directions of N and F can be specified relative to the radial coordinate by using the
angle 𝜓 (psi), below Fig. b, which is defined between the extended radial line and the tangent to
the curve.

2.7. Central-Force Motion and Space Mechanics (Merkezcil Kuvvet Hareketi ve Uzay

If a particle is moving only under the influence of a force having a line of action which is always
directed toward a fixed point, the motion is called central-force motion. This type of motion is
commonly caused by electrostatic and gravitational forces.

This equation represents the free-flight trajectory of the satellite. It is the equation of a conic section
expressed in terms of polar coordinates.
A geometric interpretation of above Eq. requires knowledge of the equation for a conic section. As
shown in below figure , a conic section is defined as the locus of a point P that moves in such a
way that the ratio of its distance to a focus, or fixed-point F, to its perpendicular distance to a fixed
line DD called the directrix, is constant. This constant ratio will be denoted as e and is called the
eccentricity. By definition

The constants h and C are determined from the data obtained for the position and velocity of the
satellite at the end of the power-flight trajectory. For example, if the initial height or distance to the
space vehicle is 𝑟0 , measured from the center of the earth, and its initial speed is 𝑣0 at the beginning
of its free flight, Figure in below, then the constant h may be obtained from Eq. (**). When
𝜃 = 𝜙 = 0, the velocity 𝑣0 has no radial component; therefore, from kinematics, 𝑣0 = 𝑟0 (𝑑𝜃⁄𝑑𝑡),

Provided 𝑟0 represents a minimum height for launching, in which frictional resistance from the
atmosphere is neglected, speeds at launch which are less than 𝑣𝑐 will cause the satellite to reenter
the earth's atmosphere and either burn up or crash.
Elliptical Orbit. All the trajectories attained by planets and most satellites are elliptical, Figure in
below. For a satellite's orbit about the earth, the minimum distance from the orbit to the center of
the earth O (which is located at one of the foci of the ellipse) is 𝑟𝑝 and can be found using Eq. (4*)
with 𝜃 = 0°. Therefore;
𝑟𝑝 = 𝑟𝑜
This minimum distance is called the perigee of the orbit. The apogee or maximum distance 𝑟𝑎 can
be found using Eq. (4*) with 𝜃 = 180°. Thus,
