TYPES OF SPEECHES ACCORDING TO PURPOSE

v INFORMATIVE SPEECH gives your audience information and facts on


subject. Your main concern in this kind of speech is to have your audience
understand and remember new information.
v PERSUASIVE SPEECH is used to influence the listener’s behavior by
changing their way of thinking. You are trying to convince or persuade
them that your opinion is best, and that you want them to come over on
your side and adopt your point of view.
v ENTERTAINING SPEECH amuses the audience, but it can also be used as a
tool to communicate a message.

The following are different ways to support your speech argument whether
informative, persuasive, or entertaining speech.

v READING FROM A MANUSCRIPT


In reading from a manuscript speech, the speaker reads every word from
a pre-written speech.
Example: news anchor with a teleprompter
v MEMORIZED SPEECH
Memorized speaking is the rote recitation of a written message that the
speaker has committed to memory.
Example: actor’s dialogue
v IMPROMPTU SPEECH
Impromptu speeches often occur when someone is asked to say “few
words”. It has no advanced planning or practice.
Example: a doctor’s response to the question of a patient
v EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH

Extemporaneous speaking is the presentation of a carefully planned and


rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner.
Example: a campaign speech before a voting public
