JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS

Job Hazard Analysis

• Useful safety management tool that can be used to

recognize, analyze and control the workplace hazards.

• Job Hazard Analysis is a technique that focuses on job tasks

as a way to identify hazards. It focuses on the relationship
between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work
environment.

ACTION = ANALYZE
What is Job Hazard Analysis?

ACTION = ANALYZE

Scope of Analysis = JOB

Specific Aspect = HAZARD

What is the root cause of our problem in Safety?

Losses

Accidents

Risk
Note: With immediate effect (exposure) from several factors

HAZARD
Job Hazard Analysis

Why is a JHA more effective than walk-around

inspections in reducing accidents in the
workplace?
Prioritizing JHA
• High Frequency of Accidents
• Increase occurrence of Near-Misses
• History of Serious Accidents / Fatalities
• Potential for Serious Harm
• New Jobs
• Changes in Procedures or Standards
JHA Team
• Supervisor
• Employee most familiar with the job
• Other employees who perform the job
• Experts or specialists (maintenance
personnel, occupational hygienists,
ergonomists or engineers)
Three (3) Steps of JHA

1. Identify basic steps of a job

2. Determine associated hazards
3. Make recommendations to control the
hazards
1. Identify the Basic Job Steps

“Generally, the job should not have more

than 15 basic steps”
a. Watch carefully as a worker performs
the entire job at least once
b. As the operator performs the job
again, list the individual steps on the
left-hand column.

BASIC JOB STEPS

1. Gather supplies.
2. Fill a large bucket with water.

3. Dunk a clean mop into the cleaning

solution.
4. Mop the floor in small sections.

5. Remove excess soap or cleaner

c. Use simple action phrases that
are short and to the point

d. Steps should always be numbered
to indicate the order
2. Determine the Hazards

• Identify all of the existing or

potential actions or conditions that
could lead to an injury or illness, or
harm to the environment.
Hazard Guide
• The physical actions required for that specific
step.
• The materials used.
• The equipment used.
• The conditions under which the step is normally
performed.

BASIC JOB STEPS EXISTING OR POTENTIAL HAZARDS

1. Gather supplies. 1. Skin contact with chemicals that

can cause burns.

2.Cluttered supplies that can cause

slip and trip accident
3. Awkward posture –
lifting and twisting
(material handling) that can
cause back pain.
3. Recommending Corrective Measures

a. Should be developed at the job site

whenever possible
b. Should be developed in sequence, beginning
with the first hazard
c. Must be specific
Controlling the hazards
• Engineering control
• Administrative control
• Personal Protective Equipment

AGAIN…..

The three (3) STEPS in

doing JHA

are………
Step 1
IDENTIFY BASIC STEPS OF THE JOB

• Observe the job as it is performed to

break it down into basic steps;
Step 2

DETERMINE ASSOCIATED HAZARDS

• Analyze each step to determine what, if

any, hazards could possibly occur
Step 3
MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO
CONTROL THE HAZARDS
• Develop recommendations for
eliminating or controlling the hazards
associated with each step.
Clear Points

• Job Hazard Analysis is one of the most effective tools available to help
supervisors protect the health and safety of their employees.

• Performing accurate and complete Job Hazards Analysis entails:

• Selecting the job to be analyzed

• Observation of the job as it is performed then breaking it down into
its most basic steps
• Analyzing each step to determine existing and potential hazards
• Developing recommendations to eliminate or control hazards
associated with each step.
