Question 1
The current drawn by a bridge rectifier is represented by the waveform shown in Figure 1
below. Use Fourier series analysis to determine an expression for obtaining the rms values of
the fundamental and the harmonics of the input current. Hence, express the rms value of the
fundamental as well as at least five harmonics of the waveform.

Figure 1. Input current waveform of a bridge rectifier.

If the bridge rectifier is supplied by a sinusoidal voltage of 240 V rms, assuming that the zero
crossing of the current waveform is 30° behind that of the input voltage waveform and that the
peak value of the current waveform is 10 A, calculate:
(i) the average power drawn by the converter,
(ii) the input displacement factor,
(iii) the input distortion factor,
(iv) the total harmonic distortion (THD%) of the input current and,
(v) the input power factor of the converter.

A small separately excited d.c. motor is fed from a 240 V, 50 Hz supply via a single phase half-
controlled bridge rectifier. Armature parameters are: inductance 0.06 H, resistance 6 , torque
(voltage) constant 0.9 Nm/A (V/rad/s). If at a particular setting the firing angle is 80 deg. and
the back e.m.f. of the motor is 150 V,
(i) determine an expression for the instantaneous armature current.
(ii) calculate the mean output torque and speed.
(iii) recalculate the above quantities for back e.m.f.’s of 250 V and 90 V.

A buck converter operating in continuous conduction mode at 10 kHz has a fixed 100 V DC
input and a fixed 50 V DC output. The converter delivers 500 W into a fixed load resistance.

Question 4
A DC-to-DC switch mode converter consists of two stages. Stage 1 is boost converter and has
a fixed DC input of 9 V. The average output of stage 1 is 15 V, which is applied to a load
modeled as a pure resistance of 100 Ω. The output of stage 1 is also applied to the input of
stage 2, a buck-boost converter, having an average output voltage of –24 V, which is applied
to a load modeled as a pure resistance of 1280 Ω. Both stages: are operated at a switching
frequency of 100 kHz, have inductor current ripple of 10 %, and have an output voltage
ripple of 1 %.
(a) Draw a circuit diagram showing all components.
(b) Determine:
(i) the average current drawn from the 9 V source,
(ii) the duty cycle, k1, applied to the switch of stage 1,
(iii) the duty cycle, k2, applied to the switch of stage 2,
(iv) the inductance, L1, for stage 1,
(v) the capacitance, C1, for stage 1,
(vi) the inductance, L2, for stage 2,
(vii) the capacitance, C2, for stage 2.
