This essay discusses following question: Will the COVID-19 vaccines end the pandemic?

Let’s begin with comparing C19 to smallpox. Smallpox was a very deadly disease for a long time and
is the only one, which was eradicated to zero. Instead of covid, only infected people showing
symptoms can spread the disease, so the disease is much easier to track. On the other hand, we must
say that smallpox has a much higher mortality and is more contagious. But, future covid mutations
could be very contagious as well. And what caused smallpox being eradicated? Worldwide
vaccination program, which lasted almost 200 years. Taking this into consideration C19 disease will
never be totally eradicated, but it could be controlled in the future, such as flu these days.

There are several problems, we have to deal with, before we will be able to win a war against the
virus.

The first one is that although the vaccines are available, a lot of people in developed world refuse
them, which undermines the vaccination effort. The second one is, that in poorer developing
countries, vaccine is still often not available for everyone who needs it thanks to dog eat dog world
and lack of interest of vaccine companies and rich countries’ governments.

For these reasons, the virus is spreading very quickly among non-vaccinated people and mutates to
be even more contagious and resistant to vaccines.

To sum up, in my point of view, the crucial point there is to vaccinate as many people as possible in
shortest time and also to try to isolate infected people and trace their contacts. In spite of all these
efforts, war with C19 virus will be a long-lasting process. To get the virus under control, the repeated
vaccination of most of population will be necessary during several following years or decades. Then
there is a big chance, that covid will develop into something much less harmful.
