LEARNING OBJECTIVES

M At the end of the lesson, most pupils will be able to read the text and match them to the correct pictures.

C At the end of the lesson, some pupils will be able to use visual clues to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words.

1. Mime an action from the sports vocabulary. E.g. ride a bike


I. PRE-LESSON 2. Pupils guess and name the action.
3. Repeat with other actions.
1. Activity 1:
 Stick the flashcards on the board.
 Point to each one and encourage pupils to say the words.
 Say I can ride a bike. I can’t play the piano. Write the sentences on the board and invite pupils
to tell you what they mean.
 Ask different pupils if they can do different actions and encourage them to answer Yes, I can./
No, I can’t.
2. Activity 2:
 Pupils look at the vocabulary pictures.
II. LESSON  Play the recording. Pupils point to the correct picture and repeat the words. (Track 9)
DEVELOPMENT  Hand out a set of pictures to groups. Pupils talk about the pictures.
 Hand out the cut up texts from copies of Student’s Book p.8 (one set per group).
 Pupils read them and match to the correct pictures.
 Ask questions to check comprehension.
3. Activity 3:
 Draw pupils’ attention to the grammar box.
 Read the sentences aloud and ask pupils to repeat.
 Encourage pupils to say sentences using can or can’t.
 Distribute worksheet. Pupils read the text from Activity 2 and circle can or can’t.
 Pupils compare their answers in pairs before the class check.
1. Ask pupils to put up their hands if they can paint/do karate etc.

2. Monitor as pupils work on the activities in the lesson to assess their understanding of can.
