2 INTRODUCTION
This module is one of many “live” documents which make up the Diving Safety Management
System applied by Pioneer Pegasus Sdn Bhd (PPSB) to provide a safe place of work for its
employees.
The modules headed INS-IPR-001 to INS-IPR-044 make up the Safe Operations Procedure
however, relevant modules may be included in any other documentation packages where
required.
Each module is a complete document covering specific subjects in detail. They represent the
latest in industry standards and will be revised from time to time.
The PPSB SOP has been prepared with all due responsible research to comply with the national
regulations of all countries within which the Company operates or intends to operate.
The recommendations made in this SOP are to be considered a safe operation minimum
requirement.

GRIT BLASTING
Confirm that the grit hose is suitable for the type of grit to be used;
Carry out daily visual inspection of the grit hose prior to use to ensure that the
hose is inacceptable condition for use;
Confirm that the grit hose has the correct pressure rating and that the details of
the hose are marked on the outer sheath of the hose;
All junctions and couplings between hoses must be secured using whip-checks;
Carry out visual inspection of all whip-checks that are to be used;
Minimum bend radius as per manufacture specifications is to be respected during
use, storage and transport. If no radius is available use MBR of 2m.

7 PPE
All personnel to wear full PPE with the following additional PPE to be worn by the hopper
operator at all times during grit-blasting operation:
Closed safety goggles (Alpine ski type);
full face mask;
heavy duty gloves;
hearing protection;
Coverall to be closed properly.
8 GRIT OPERATIONS
1. Confirm work permit in place.
2. Barrier work area: unauthorized personnel must not be able to access the work
area.
3. Personnel to wear full PPE.
4. Operator of the grit hopper to wear closed safety googles (Alpine ski type), full
face mask, heavy duty gloves and sound barrier. Coverall to be closed properly
(no exposed skin).
5. Operator of the remote control to be in communication with Supervisor.
6. Check if hopper is filled with grit.
7. Check if grit is dry. Wet grit will block the hose. Quarantine all wet grit so that it
cannot be used.
8. Connect equipment according to the above drawing.
9. Secure all grit hose connections, incl. grit hose connection to kettle, with a
securing pin.
10. Secure all hose (air and grit) connections with whips-checks. Tape-off security
whips and connections to prevent the whips-check from snagging on other
objects or personnel.
11. Confirm grit valve is closed.
12. Filling the kettle: isolate the kettle from the compressor/dryer by closing dryer
valve. Remove cover of the grit kettle. Check if the cone is dropped back into the
open position. Fill the grit kettle by opening hopper valve. Clean any grit from the
cone and check that there is no grit directly around the cone (cone must be able
to move freely to close the kettle).
13. Close lid on top of kettle.
14. Check industrial LP-work air compressor: oil level, fuel level, cool water level,
valves and connections.
15. Check the dryer: valves #2 and #3 functional.
16. Ensure remote control is de-activated.
17. Compressor to be set at 21m3, and 8 bar up to 20m. For each 10m depth more,
the compressor needs to be able to deliver a minimum of 1 bar more.
18. Start compressor and allow 5 minutes for the engine to warm up before
activating the compressor.
19. To activate the compressor: follow instructions on the machine.
20. Slowly open main valve.
21. Check dryer is functional/rotating.

GRIT BLASTING
The hose will block when there is too little air or too much grit.
27. To stop gritting: first close grit valve. Wait until there is no more grit in the hose.
Then de-activate remote control after instruction of the supervisor (“MAKE IT
COLD”). The GRIT HOSE AND KETTLE WILL DEPRESSURIZE.
28. CLOSE DRYER VALVE AND MAIN VALVE AND STOP THE COMPRESSOR
ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS ON MACHINE.
9 OPERATION
Pre-job meeting: discuss location of the area/item to be cleaned, PPE, barriers,
tasks of personnel, dive depth and deployment length of grit hose;
Assess dive profile, bottom times and location of downline;
Prepare grit unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions and checklists;
Diver to connect downline;
Deck personnel to deploy grit hose;
Diver to collect grit hose and move to the work location;
If possible: connect the grit hose to the structure to reduce drag. Have sufficient
over-length for the diver to move around the area/item to be cleaned;
Confirm that the diver is at the correct location before starting to clean;
Diver to ask for air on the grit hose. When all water has been pushed out of the
air hose by the air, the grit can be added;
Move the nozzle around away from the diver at an angle of 30 to 45 degrees
relative to the surface;
Check if area has been cleaned according to the required specification before
cleaning is completed.
