BSED ENGLISH III

Activity 4:

Jonathan knows he hasn’t really prepared for his speech very well. Instead of going to the library, he
went to a party over the weekend. Instead of finding supporting evidence, he went to the movies with
his best friend.
Two days before he’s going to give his speech, Jonathan decides that he won’t even bother with the
library. Instead, he opts to just write out a quick speech and fill it with lots of “flowery” language. He
creates a number of interesting similes and metaphors. He makes sure that his speech has a fun rhythm
to it and has some great instances of alliteration. Upon finishing his preparation, Jonathan thinks to
himself, Well, the speech may have no content, but no one will really notice.

1. Is it ever ethical to be devoid of content and opt instead for colorful language?

No,it is not ethical to be devoid of content and opt instead for colorful language. Some people have the
misconception that fabricating speeches with flowery words will make the speech more impressive for
the listeners but it is wrong.Speakers should put in mind that the meaning of the speech is the most
important and also the way it is delivered (which Jonathan does not make). If the speech is full of flowery
words then it will just confuse the audience and thus , the speaker is not being understood.

2. Should language ever be a substitute for strong arguments?

Strong argument should never be substituted over language use. In delivering ideas, what you want to
imply must be considered first than the language you will use in the speech delivery.Content first before
structure.Language is the basic instrument to convey ideas but it must be proper, ethical and credible so
it cannot damage credibility, undermine the argument,or alienate the audience.

3. If you were a friend of Jonathan’s, how would you explain to him that his behavior was unethical?

If I were a friend of Jonathan, I would start telling him about his mistakes in delivering his speech.I would
tell him that he must consider that the purpose of giving speeches is to make people understand what
he wants to convey so,he must stop using words that are out of the context and must focus on the
content instead. Also,to talk in front of many people is a big opportunity;to be heard by many is
something that other people cannot have so he must use the opportunity properly. Moreover,I would
tell him my advice that next time he must prepare for proper speech delivery and be a remarkable
speaker to us.
