Water will leave the cell if it is placed in a hypertonic solution, and the cell will shrink
(plasmolysis). In an isotonic environment, there is no net water movement, so the cell’s size remains
unchanged. Water will enter a cell if it is placed in a hypotonic environment, causing it to swell
(cytolysis).
