L-1 GROWING PLANTS

A. Answer the followings:

Q.1- Define a flower and write the important function of its main parts.

Ans.A flower is the reproductive organ of a flowering plant and has four main
parts–sepals, petals, stamen and pistil.

Sepals – They are the small, leaf-like structures at the base of the flower. The
main function of sepals is to protect the flower in the budding stage.

Petals – They are the brightly colored parts of the plant. The main function of
petals is to attract insects and birds.

Stamen – It is the male reproductive organ of the flower. Each stamen consists of
a stalk or a filament and a sac like tip called the anther. The filament holds the
anther up while anther contains pollen grains which are required for reproduction.

Pistil – It is the female reproductive organ of the flower. A pistil is made of 3

parts– stigma, style and ovary. Stigma receives the pollen grains while style
functions as a connection between stigma and ovary. The style ends in a bulb like
structure called ovary which contains the female egg cells called ovules.

Q.2- What is Pollination?

Ans. The process of transfer of pollens from the anther to the stigma of the same
or another flower is called pollination. When the pollens are transferred to the
stigma of the same flower, it is called self-pollination and when they are
transferred to the stigma of a different flower of another plant, it is called
cross-pollination.

Pollination may occur because of wind, insects, birds or other animals. These are
called pollinating agents or pollinators.

Q.3- Give the examples of monocots and dicots.

Ans. Monocots
Dicots

Q.4- Mention any 3 ways in which the seeds get dispersed.

Ans. By wind- Seeds of cotton, dandelion, drumstick and maple are dispersed by
wind.

By water- Seeds of waterlily, coconut and lotus fruit are dispersed by water.

By explosion- Plants like peas, cotton and beans have pods that explode when they
ripen.

Q.5- Define the followings.

Ans.Fertilization- The process of fusion of pollens and ovules in the ovary is called
fertilization.

Germination-The process by which a seed produces a baby plant or a seedling in

the presence of air, water and warmth.

Vegetative Reproduction- In this type of reproduction, plants reproduce through

their parts such as stems (example. Ginger, Potato), leaves (ex. Bryophyllum) and
roots(ex. Dahlia, Sweet potato).

Reproduction through Spores- Mosses and ferns reproduce with the help of
spores, because they do not have flowers and therefore no seeds.

Weeding- Removal of unwanted plants(weeds) in agriculture process.

Q.6- Write the differences between Kharif crops and Rabi crops.

Ans.

Kharif Crops Rabi Crops

They are grown in the rainy season, i.e. They are grown in the winter season,
from June to September. i.e. from November to January
Examples: Rice, maize, jowar, bajra, Examples: Wheat, barley, peas, gram and
pulses, peanuts, jute and cotton. mustard.

B. Give reasons.

1. Reproduction is an important process.

Ans. Reproduction is a biological process by which new individual organisms

(offspring) are produced from their parents.Reproduction in plants takes place
through seeds or through body parts (stems, roots, leaves) and through spores in
nonflowering plants.

2. Pollination is important in nature.

Ans. Pollination is important because it leads to the production of seeds that will
create more plants. For formation of a seed, it is necessary that the pollens from
the anther meet the ovules of the pistil. For this to happen, plants depend on the
pollination in which external agents carry the pollens to the pistil of a flower so
that fusion of pollens and ovules can take place.

3. Seeds need to be dispersed.

If plants grow too closely together, they have to compete for sunlight, water and
nutrients from the soil. Seed dispersal prevents overcrowding (provides space for
the growth of plants) and avoids competition for sunlight, water and nutrients.

4.Mosses and ferns reproduce with the help of spores.

Mosses and ferns do not have flowers and therefore no seeds, that’s why they
reproduce with the help of spores.
C. Picture study:

Observe the pictures and write the scientific term used to describe the process.

1. 2.

3. 4.

5.
Ans.

1- Self-pollination

2- Seed dispersal through wind

3- Threshing

4- Vegetative reproduction through leaves in Bryophyllum

5- Seed dispersal through animals.

HW

Q1. Why are crops sprayed with pesticides?

Q2.With the help of a diagram show parts of a seed.

WORKBOOK PAGES:

1. Fill in the blanks.

a) A _______________ are small leaf-like structure present at the base of a

flower.

Ans: sepals
b) Ginger is an underground ____________ that can be used to grow new plants.

Ans: stems
c) The process of fusion of pollens and ___________ in the ovary is called
fertilization.

Ans: ovules
d) ______________ is the process by which seeds are scattered away from the
mother plant.

Ans: Seed dispersal

2.Match the following:

Plants Vegetative Reproduction method

a) Dahlia i)Through stems
b) Potato ii) Through leaves
c) Bryophyllum iii)Through spores
d) Ferns iv)Through roots

Ans: a) iv), b) i), c) ii) d) iii)

3.Give three examples of following:

a) Kharif crops
Ans: Rice, maize, jowar, bajra, pulses, peanuts, jute and cotton

b) Rabi crops
Ans: Wheat, barley, peas, gram, and mustard. c)Oil-producing plants

Ans: mustard, sunflower and soybean

4.Answer in one sentence.

a) Give functions of the following.

(i) Petals

Ans:The main function of petals is to attract insects and birds.

(ii) Sepals

Ans:The main function of sepals is to protect the flower in the budding stage.

b) What is pollination?
Ans:The process of transfer of pollens grains from the anther to the stigma
of the same or another flower is called pollination.

c) Give the names of parts of apistil.

Ans:A pistil consists of three parts:stigma, style and ovary.

5.Give reasons.
a) Seeds should not be sown too close to each other.
Ans: If seeds are sown too close to each other, they will not be able to grow
because seeds need proper space to germinate.

b) Crops are sprayed with pesticides.

Ans: Crops are sprayed with pesticides to protect them from the different
types of pests.

6. Observe the picture and label the diagram.

7. Sameera wanted to grow potato at home in a pot. She planted a potato with
small buds. After some days she noticed that plant was growing but she could not
see potatoes on the plant. Suggest why she could not see potatoes on the plant?

Ans: Potatoes are modified stems that grow under the soil. hence, Sameera
could not see potatoes on the plant.

8. Solve the puzzle

9. Higher Order Thinking questions :
It has been observed that there is a sharp decrease in the population of
butterflies and honeybees in recent years. Butterflies and honeybees are
important as they help in pollination. What will happen if their number continues to
drop? Suggest ways to help retain their numbers at least in your area.

Ans: If the number of butterflies and honeybees continues to drop, it will be

difficult for the plants to pollinate. Some plants may not give rise to new
plants due to this. We can plant flowering plants or trees in our area and take
care of them. This will attract butterflies and honeybees and help increase
their number.
