FACTORS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION AFFECTING JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In today’s time and age, modern-day living in the Philippines and other countries does
not always embrace the necessity for adequate sleep. Sleep is as vital as regular
exercise. Thus, it is important to make an effort to get enough sleep regularly. Adequate
sleep is associated on academic performance and well-being among the junior high
school students. Having enough sleep allows your body and mind to function properly.
Getting adequate sleep is defined as 6-8 hours per night on more than four weekdays
per week. While Inadequate sleep also means insufficient sleep which is not advisable to
anyone. Getting not enough sleep regularly can get you problems that consists of having
high blood pressure, anemia, depression, agitation and apathy. However, students are
still not well informed that insufficient sleep adversely affects our body, brain, and mood
to change rapidly which causes them to get poor academic performance.

According to the previous study that Curcio, Ferrara, and Gennaro (2006) reviewed,
there is approximately 103 studies about sleep loss and academic performance. This
includes students of different levels. Most (31 out of 37) studies involved elementary or
high school students. The researchers found out that sleep-deprived students
performed poorly such as attention, problem solving tasks, and memory therefore
affected their academic performance. Related to sleep loss, sleep studies have
examined cognitive performance and GPA. In an experimental study involving the junior
high school students which Pilcher and Walters (1997) concluded that sleep-deprived
participants had lower scores than non-sleep-deprived students. However, Pilcher,
Vander Wood, and O’Connell (2011) found no significant effects when individuals
worked on tasks in pairs rather than individually. This study seeks to investigate the
effects of sleep deprivation on junior high school students’ academic performance. The

researchers determined the negative and positive effects that we collected from the
survey we distributed to our respondents.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions

Research Questions:

The purpose of this is to explore and learn the differences between sleep deprived students and
not sleep-deprived students. This serves as our guide to learn more about sleep deprivation
affecting junior high school students.

 How often do you feel sleepy in the day time while studying?
 On a scale of 1 to 10, how often do you stay up late?
 What time do you usually go to sleep at night?
 Why do students like you tends to stay up late?
 As a junior high school student, how does sleep deprivation affects your
academic performance?

Significance of the Study

The study redounds to the learners to reflect on managing their time. Sleep is an essential thing
to keep your mind and body alert. This helps to point out the flaws and risks that students take,
it shows how unhealthy their practices are which can lead to serious health problems. The
learners should develop a significant plan of sleep schedule to effectively implement a complete
8 hours of sleep to also help improve their academic performance. This study contributes
numerous factors that may help prevent the common diseases and disorder that occurs when
there are not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to your body’s organs. Lack of adequate
sleep affects not only our brain but also our health. Adequate sleep give us positive effects such
as tireless stamina, enhanced creativity, heightened awareness, and a cheerful mood. This shall
serve as an eye-opener for them to not commit more wrong doings and prioritize health. This
study can make a lot of positive effects if followed.

II. Methods

This study will be using the qualitative type of research. The research study focused on
how the junior high school students deal with sleep deprivation. The respondents in this
study are (5) first year high school students, (5) second year high school students, (5)
third year high school students, and (5) fourth year high school students. The
researchers used interview guide questions to find the effects of sleep deprivation to
junior high school students and broke the data into small segments that reflect a single
specific answer. As for the data, the researchers analyzed the qualitative data and
determined the effects of sleep deprivation formulated in the respondents’ answers
through the interview guide questions. Lastly, the researchers generalized the meaning
of the said topic and data.

STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
In this discussion, we first begin by comparing the study sample and the results that
respondents answered. (1) Based on our survey that we distributed, majority of the junior
high school students are always sleepy even in the day time while studying. They are
bored or they lose interests while others don’t feel sleepy at all. (2) The majority of the
students answered a scale of 8 which shows that they sleep extremely late and if in
competency level means far behind schedule. (3) Majority of our respondents sleeps at
exactly 12 midnight while others stay up very late. (4) It states on our survey that they
usually stay up late because of several reasons but most of them answered they do
homework sometimes, getting distracted to anything and to make most out of their free
time to play online games. (5) Most of the students’ answers is they don’t understand the
lessons and cannot focus in school, that’s why they can’t get enough sleep but are
developing numerous kinds of disorders. Another factor is that at night, we can freely do
what we want because there would be no chores for us to do. In addition to that, the
silence helps them in studying and the fact that the internet connection at night is faster
than in day time.

Literature Review

Sleep is really an essential thing we need. Throughout several studies that researchers
discovered, students nowadays are barely getting enough sleep. This study concerns the
majority of the Junior High School students that are usually sleep-deprived even while studying.
It affects the students’ mental health and physical health. Some students don’t know what it
takes to acquire disorders or diseases in their teenage days. They don’t have proper teaching
about sleep which is why most of them have difficulties to stay alert or focused in school.

Objectives of the Study

 To find out the effects of sleep deprivation on the academic performance among the
junior high school students.

STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
 The purpose of this pilot study was to understand junior high school students’
perception of relationship between slee deprivation and learning.
 This should be an example to students who are usually sleep-deprived.
 To teach students how to manage their time at night.
 To help them prevent health problems.
 To prioritize their responsibilities or obligations as a student.
 To enrich their minds on how sleep deprivation affects a human body.

I. CONCLUSIONS

High school students may lack the knowledge that chronic sleep deprivation can result to acute
and chronic health problems. Nurses and students must collaborate to reduce the number of
limit overtime hours and better educate students on the negative impact of sleep deprivation.
Laboratory experiments on the effects of sleep deprivation have shown that failing to get
enough rest can later on cause major health problems. Some of the most serious potential
problems that are associated with chronic sleep deprivation are highblood pressure, diabetes,
heart attack, heart failure or stroke. people who do not get enough hours of high-quality sleep.
Lack of sleep will interfere with the natural healing process that takes place within the body,
which is detrimental to health and wellness. Sleep is not only beneficial to physical health but to
emotional health, safety, and quality of life. Anybody can experience the increasing levels of
stress hormones because of their unhealthy sleep habit which also disrupts a person’s normal
metabolism. Risking your sleep will surely make you suffer in the end. For some it is not a very
serious topic when it comes to sleep, but this can be very disturbing once you’ve experienced
being sleep deprived and sleep paralysis. If you help yourself, you surely can prevent diseases
and being sleep deprived by simply having a good 8 to 10 hours sleep.
