C. Presentation

Listening Strategies

Listening Strategies are techniques or

activities that contribute directly to the
comprehension and recall of listening input.
Listening is the one skill that you use the
most in everyday life. Listening
comprehension is the basis for your speaking,
writing and reading skills.

Suggestions for Improving Your Listening

Skills
1. Be Attentive – practice mindfulness by
consciously eliminating distractions from
your mind and body.
2. Ask Questions – one of the ways you can
live in the moment is by asking clear
questions. Often times, people's comments
are open to interpretation to understand their
desire to understand what they hear.one of the
ways you can stay in the moment is to ask
clarifying questions.
3. Don’t interrupt unnecessarily – use the
acronym WAIT, Why Am I Talking? to keep
your comments relative to the speaker’s
thoughts.
4. Use body language – being able to
understand and interpret body language can
help you grasp other people's unspoken
questions, problems, or negative feelings.
Face-to-face, you can convey that you are
listening by nodding, smiling, and
maintaining eye contact.
5. Empathize – the ability to perceive the
feelings of others, as well as to imagine what
someone else is thinking or feeling. To listen
effectively to what the speaker is saying, try
to look at him from his perspective.
6. Take notes – it provides you with a
permanent record to refer back to. Good note
taking will improve your active listening,
comprehension of material, and retention. “None Ma’am.”

 Discussion “Okay Ma’am”

“Today, our topic is all about the Listening

Strategies. Do you have an idea what is this (The student will read the text on the
all about?” screen)

“If that so, let us now discuss it one by one.” “Yes Ma’am”

“Can somebody please read what is listening

strategies”

“Thank you. When we say listening strategies

it is another way on how we can improve our
listening skill. When we listen, we can get
information and details from it. Right? “ “We can get important information
about the typhoon.”
“When we listen, we concentrate, we focus
and we understand what is being said.”

“For example, there is typhoon and you are “We can get to know what is
listening to news from the radio, what can happening in our surroundings.”
you get from it? Anyone? Please raise your
hand.” “Yes ma’am”

“Very good! We can get information from it. (The students will read the text)
and we can prepare for the typhoon. We can
be aware for what is going to happen.”

Teacher: ‘Alright. Now let us discuss the

ways on how we can improve our listening
skills. Who can read the first one? “ “Ma’am.”
“Thank you. We have to be attentive, for us
to be able to focus on the main topic or idea.” (The students answer may vary)

“Who can read the next one?’

“Yes, please.”

Teacher: “Why we need to ask questions?”

Anyone, please raise your hand”

Teacher: “Yes, exactly. We need to ask

questions to make clear things, and to avoid “Yes Ma’am”
misunderstanding.”
“Asking questions is very important
especially in our lives because when we ask (The student will read the text.)
questions, it means that our mind is
working.”

“Ma’am, because when we are

“Do you understand? listening and we got interrupted
maybe we cannot focus on what is
being said.”
“Okay, the third one is, Don’t Interrupt
unnecessarily. Can somebody please read.”
“When someone interrupt us and we

WAIT meaning Why Am I Talking? Why do
you think is the reason? Can you share your
own ideas?”

“Yes, very good. “

“Who has another idea?”
“Yes, Ma’am.

“Exactly. We may lose focus if we let (The student will read the text)
someone interrupt us.”

“To avoid interruption, we must focus and “To understand the speaker’s thoughts

“Ma’am we use body language to

“Alright. Let’s move to the fourth one.

speaker. And body language can be a
response, yes. By simply nodding, smiling
and so on.”

“Is it clear? Any questions?” “Ma’am, for example my friend is

talking to me about her crush and as a

emotions by showing empathy.”
“Thank you. When we say empathize it is
someone’s ability to understand the feeling of “Yes Ma’am”
others. We tend to listen to the speaker
effectively and think as if we are on their
situation.” (The student will read the text)

“Can you give a situation where you can

show an empathy.”
“Yes ma’am.”

“The last one is note taking/taking notes. “None Ma’am.”

When we are taking down note we can

“We can improve our listening skill by

remembering the details through what?” “Be attentive.”

“Yes, very good. By taking notes.”

“Ask questions”
“So do you understand our lesson?”
“Don’t interrupt unnecessarily”
“Do you any questions? Clarifications?”
“Use body language”
“Again, how many strategies do we have
discussed?” “Empathize”
