III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Preliminaries:

“Good morning students!” “Good morning ma’am!”

“Let’s have a short activity but before that, Ms. (Ms. Pineda stands up in front of the class and
Pineda please lead the prayer.” leads the prayer. Students stand up and pray)

“None.”
“How’s everyone? Do we have absent students
today?”

“Very good, I prepared a short activity for you

before we start the discussion.”

Motivation:

“I’ll give you 3 minutes to group yourselves into 6

groups, and I'll play a video about public (Students form 6 groups)
speaking. I want you to analyze the video and
answer the question that I'm going to present to
you after you watch the video.”

Bad Public Speaking Example 2 (Students watch and analyze the video)

“Alright, I’ll give you 5 minutes to answer this

question and this will be answered by groups in a
yellow paper. One representative will share the
group’s insight about the video you analyze.”+

Questions:
1. What are your observations on how the (Students will speaks with their group members
speaker delivers her speech? and give ideas and answers)

“Time’s up! Representative please share your (The representatives will shares heir answers in
group’s answer in the class.” the class)

“Very well, let’s give them a round of applause. (Students clap and representatives goes back to
Thank you students, you can now go back to your the seats)
seats.”

“Your answers are all correct.”

“The representatives deliver their speech or their

answers clearly and with confidence but that’s not
the only thing that matters in speech delivery, let’s
proceed with the discussion of how to deliver a
speech effectively.”

Discussion:

(Present the PowerPoint Presentation of the topic)

“A good speech not only depends on its content

but it also depends on how you deliver the
message, how you present yourself in front of the
audience and how you communicate with them.”

“Please read what is a good speech delivery (Students will read the sentence presented in the
according to the book of Stephen Lucas, ‘The Art TV)
of Public Speaking.’”
“A good speech delivery means that you are able
to present your message in a clear, coherent, and
interesting way.”

“Very good. In delivering an effective speech,

there are a lot of things to consider and that’s what
we're going to discuss today.”
“So, there are 6 principles to consider to deliver an (The students will read the 6 principles which
effective speech, and what are those? Everyone, presented in the LED TV)
please read.”
“The 6 principles are:
1. Articulation
2. Modulation
3. Stage Presence
4. Facial Expression
5. Gestures and movement
6. Rapport with audience

“Very good, so anyone who has an idea what the (Student will give a short definition of
articulation is?” articulation)
“Articulation is the pronunciation of a word.”

“Very good! articulation is the clear and

understandable pronunciation of words. (The students will repeat the sentence)
“Try to say, ‘who wants to eat?’” “Who wants to eat?”

“What do you notice when you speak or make a (Students will answer and give their ideas.”
sound?” “Our lips and tongue move when we produce a
sound.”

“That’s correct, when you speak or say a word,

there are movements of the lips, tongue, teeth, the
top of the mouth or the palate and also in the
respiratory system.”

“Articulation refers to the speaker’s pronunciation

of the speech since clear pronunciation effectively
conveys the message. It will also be understood
easier by the receiver of the message. So, if the
speaker has a poor articulation, the receiver will
have a problem understanding your message.”

“Similar to the video that you have watched, the

girl is reading the book, she has the confidence to
read it with feelings but the way she reads it or the
way she pronounces the words, it is quite hard for
everyone to understand what is being said.”

“What do you think is wrong with the girl in the

video? Why is it hard to understand her?” (Students will raise their hands and answer)
“The girl has the confidence to speak in front of
the class but the way she presents the content of
the book is not very clear, she eats her words that
we almost didn’t understand and the tone and the
volume of her voice are quite annoying.”

“Very good, because she reads the words without

thinking if it's understandable by the receiver or
not. She did not pronounce the words with clarity
and that’s why we cannot understand her speech
clearly.”

“Next is the second principle which is the

modulation, it is how we control our voice when
we speak.”

“Give me an example of modulation.” (Students will raise their hands and give an
example of modulation)
“I speak informal with my friends, I speak loudly
and don't care what voice I should make because
they are my friends, but when I speak with my
teacher, I use a calm tone and speak slowly.”

“Very Good! It is the ability to control our vocal

tone, adjustment of pace, pitch, power, and
volume.”

“An example is when you get mad at someone,

your tone changes. When you’re sick or feeling
sad, when you are happy or excited, your voice
changes.”

“In speech, controlling voice is very important as (Students will answer)

we don’t want to listen to someone who has a “Yes ma’am.”
crack voice or very high pitch voice when
speaking right?”

“So, Controlling our voice in speech also means

delivering a speech effectively. Why do you think (Students volunteers to answer the question)
we should not deliver speech in a monotone?” “Because when we speak in public, we should
present the message with feelings.”
“Very good, it will make your audience bored.
Control your speed and make sure that the
audience is listening and understanding the words
you are saying.”
“How do you speak when you are scared or (Students will answer)
nervous?” “Fast!”

“Correct, we speak fast when we’re scared or (Students will answer)

nervous. What about when we are sad?” “Low and slowly!”

“That is correct, see? The tone of our voice

changes based on a situation, so we need to be
able to have a skill to control it when we speak in
public. In giving a speech, speaking fast indicates
that a person lacks confidence or is nervous.”

“Does everyone understand the articulation and “Yes ma’am.”

modulation?”

“Okay now let’s move on to the third principle; (Students will read the sentence)
Stage Presence. Everyone, please read.” “Stage presence is your confidence to share and
speak in front of the audience.”

“Very well, It is the confidence to speak in public,

an example is the 6 representatives that shared
their insight today. They speak confidently in front
of the class.”

“So, is there anyone who has an idea on why we (Students will answer)
need confidence or why we should have a proper “To deliver a message clearly and in a way that
stage presence in public speaking?” the audience will understand it, we need the
confidence to stand on the stage and get the
audience to listen.”

“Very good!”

“So the next principle is facial expression, why do (Student will volunteers to answer)
you think facial expressions are important in “We need to control our facial expression with the
public speaking?” message we will deliver to share the emotion of
the message.”
“Very good. For effective delivery of speech, you
need to also control your facial expression
according to your message.”

“A smile is a good start to speak with your

audience and we don’t want a speaker who has no
expression at all.”

“Speaking with no expression will be

misunderstood by the audience and think that you
don’t want to speak with them, and the audience
will be bored if you have a stoic face while
making your speech.”

“If you’re sharing a happy or a positive message

with the audience, what expression should we “A happy facial expression.”
use?”

“That’s correct, so make a facial expression based

on the situation and content of your message.”

“The next principle is the gestures and movement,

please read, everyone” “Hand gestures are frequently used to highlight
certain parts of speech and to strengthen the
speaker's message.”

“Why do you think we need to control our (Students volunteers to answer and give their
gestures and movement in public speaking?” ideas)
“In speech, we need to look presentable in front of
our audience and to not make them annoyed by
the weird gestures and movements we'll make.”

“Very good, In the video you watched earlier, you

can see the awkward and uncomfortable gestures
and movements of a speaker which appears to be
inappropriate, it makes you look less confident
and the audience might feel annoyed by the
gestures you make.”

“Gestures and movement are also known as body

language, which speakers use to have a non-verbal
communication with the audience.”

“And lastly, the rapport with the audience. Is

everyone here aware of what rapport is?” “Yes/No Ma’am.”

“Okay for those who are not familiar with rapport,

It is a trust or connection between the speaker and
audience.”
“For the audience to listen to you attentively, you
need to build a connection with them, or you can
write a speech that appeals to them.”

“An example is the vloggers, who likes to watch a (some students raise their hands)
vlog here?”

“And what is the current content that is trending (Students answers)

as of today?” “Prankings and challenges.”
“Social Experiment.”
“Fitness and travel vlogs.”

“Very good! So, there is a lot of content they make

to entertain the audience or the viewers of their
video. It is because we find the vloggers funny,
interesting and entertaining.”

“Vloggers create content according to the

audience's interest, or according to what is in
trends today. With that, they capture the interest of
the audience and make them to like their videos
and watch their other vlogs too.”

“...and that’s the end of our lesson today. So, does

everyone understand the principles of good public (The students will say “none" if they have no
speaking? If you have any questions, please raise questions.)/(The students will raise their hands
your hand.” and ask questions.)

“Very well, now let’s have an activity.”

IV. Assessment

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Since we have 6 principles and 6 groups, go to

your groups; we will have an activity.”

“The 1st principle will be the topic of the 1st (Students form a circle to discuss the activity)
group, 2nd principles for the 2nd group and so
on.”
“We will have a short role play on how you can Students perform a short role player
use the principles in different situations. You will
create scenes which demonstrate those 6
principles.”

V. Generalization

“Let’s hear what you learned today. What are the 6 (Students will share what they understand and
principles and why do we need to consider those learned in today’s discussion)
principles in public speaking?

“Everyone did well today, now let’s have an

individual activity.”
