the Regular Nouns

So lets proceed now to our activity as a sort of review for yesterdays lesson

KESHA: Nouns are one of the most important elements of the English language.
They function as subjects; they show possession; they pluralize singular
words; and they act as common and proper words too
Students: Nouns are important because they refer to places, objects and
people and the more sophisticated abstract concepts. Without nouns, you will
be left with verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The lack of nouns will eradicate
any subject or object from your sentence which is as good as communication
essentially nothing.
V . MOTIVATION
Okay class, as we start our new lessons, you will be watching a short video
STUDENTS: The students will watched the short video presentation )
.
And after the video presentation , I will be asking some students about the video that have been
watched.
Teacher : Anna can you please stand and tell what is all about the topic ?
Anna : The video shows our new topic which is the Irregular Nouns and also it shows the rules of how
we are going to use the irregular nouns.
AKESHA: the video shows the difference between regular and irregular nouns because Regular Nouns
follows the regular way to make the noun plural is by adding “ s or es” but Irregular Nouns do not
follow the Irregular way .
Okay Thankyou Daniel, for your answer.. Any other hands?” okay no more raising their hands.
Okay let us start our new lesson , But before that we must read our Lesson Objectives
“At the end of 20 minutes of class discussion, 90 percent of the Grade 8 section Narra students are
expected to:
Our topic for today is related in our previous lesson but this type of nouns do not follow the same
rules as regular nouns when becoming plural and often follow a pattern, originating in the parent
language or rules of older forms of English.
But before that we must know what is Irregular Nouns
Jayann : Irregular Noun Is a type of noun that becomes plural by changing its spelling that do not
become plural by adding s or es.
As Jayann reads Irregular Nouns do not follow the regular way unlike the regular noun in making the
noun plural. Understand?
TEachers : so how we change the singular noun into plural noun in irregular noun? So it may seem like
they are just breaking grammar rules but really Irregular Plural Nouns are just Following Spelling Rules
If the word in a consonant plus “y” then change the “y” to an “i” and add the letters “es”
Teacher: as what you observed the y changes into ies from singular noun Baby becomes the Plural
Noun Babies .
Teacher : but there is a note that “ When a word ends in a vowel and “y” ( such as Monkey or Day)
You just easily add an “s” to the end ,
Understand class ?
Teacher: Okay lets proceed to rule number 2 , please read ms. Akesha
So rule number 2 simply said that those nouns that end in “ f or ‘”fe” must drop and easily replace or
add the “ves”
Teacher : okay Ms Ana can you give example for rule number 2
Ana : From Singular Pronoun Loaf change into Plural Noun Loaves
Teacher : excellent .
I guess you already understand the rule number two , but take note on this : When a noun ends in a
double vowel and an “f” ( such as roof or proof) , it doesn’t change to “ves” in the plural form,
Instead , just add an “s” to the end and it goes like this : From Roof to Roofs
From Proof to Proofs
Change the “us” into an “i” ( especially comes from a Latin words),
Another is, it also acceptable to add “es” instead of changing to “ I” in some cases( especially if the
word has a Greek root)
Teacher : as what rule number state that nouns that end in “us” is just simply change the “us” into an
“i”( especially that comes from a latin root words)
And another exceptions is by adding “es” instead of changing to “I” ( especially if the word has a greek
root)
And May I call on Allen to give another example for the rule number 3
And I think you ll understand the rule 3 so lets proceed to Rule 4 , Ms. Akesha please read the rule
number 4
So rule number 4 simply said that singular nouns that end in “um” will drop out and replace by “ia”
So rule number 4 is very simple…
(Daniel responded)
And since you get already and understand now the rule number 4 lets proceed to rule number 5
Can you read rule number 5 Ana
(Ana responded)
So as what Ms. Ana said the singular noun words that end in “is is simply replace to an “es” right?
(Jayann Responded)
Teacher : why
Jayann : simply the “is” is replace by “es” that why it becomes Diagnoses
Teacher : that is correct , thankyou Ms. Jayann , please take your seat.
And now let us proceed to rule number 6 , ALLEN PLEASE READ RULE number 6
6. IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT CHANGE COMPLETELY
Certain Irregular Plural nouns such as children or teeth don’t follow any grammatical rules at all. The
only way to get them right is to memorize them.
So this rule said that there are certain Irregular Plural Nouns that don’t follow any grammmatical rules
and we only have to memorize their spelling right?
Yes Mam
Teacher : so these certain IrregULAR Plural nOUNS DOES NOT FOLLOW grammatical rules. As the rule
number 5 stated ,
( responded)
And also : UNCHANGING NOUNS - Many nouns have the same singular and plural forms, especially
species of animals. And you can tell that they are plural by reading the context rules in the rest of the
sentence.
And when we use it in a sentence it goes like this: Three deer crossed the street.
TeachER : thankyou mr. Daniel , as what rule number 7 said , it simply stated that there are irregular
plural nouns that don’t change at all
Like in the example in Uncountable Noun from Singular Noun which is hair , to plural noun which is
Hair again …
Understand class ?
Yes mam,
Who can give another example for rule number 7 in uncountable noun
Teacher ; And for Unchanging Nouns it is said that these nouns have the same singular and plural
forms, especially species of animals. And you can tell that they are plural by reading the context rules
in the rest of the sentence.
And we can use it in a sentence : for example: How many fish did you catch?
It doesn’t change the Plural noun because as what the rule stated there are nouns have the same
singular or plural forms especially in the soecies of animals , and we can only tell that they are plural
by reading the context rules in the rest of the sentence.
Teacher : very good Jyaan , very well said , pleaase take your seat.
Okay so I think that these lessons is very understandable and I guess that all of you understand the
what is irregular nouns and the proper usage of its rules when creating a n Irregular Nouns
“ yES Mam”
Vll. GENERALIZATION/SYNTHESIS
Okay , questions...
Did you understand our lesson?”
Jayann: In knowing the rules of Irregular Nouns it helps us to use the irregular nouns correctly.
okay very good” ( Daniel is raising his hand)
VIII. DRILLS
Allen :
READ EACH SENTENCE: Figure out the plural form of the noun in parentheses and write it on the line.
Akesha : the plural form for man is men , so the sentence goes like , Four men worked on the project.
The plural form for lady is ladies , so three old ladies walked by.
The next to answer is Ana , can you please stand Ms. Ana
The plural form for wife is wives, so Henry had six wives.
Akesha : The plural form for fungus is Fungi so the sentence goes like , Mushrooms and mold are both
fungi.
