Book 3 Chapter 9-12

i. Why is Mr. Lorry angry with Jerry Cruncher?

I. Mr. Lorry is angry with Jerry Cruncher as he has discovered that Jerry is secretly
digging graves and selling bodies and Mr. Lorry is angry that his loyal worker is
doing illegal work.

ii. What deal has Sydney Carton worked out with Barsad?

ii. The deal is that Barsad will help Sydney Carton switch places with Darnay and
sacrifice himself on the guillotine to save Darnay and let him life a happy life
because Carton believes that Darnay might not be acquitted but executed.

iii. What is Lorry’s reaction to this?

iii. Lorry breaks into tears and cries hearing the circumstances and Darnay’s
possible execution.

iv. Where does Carton go after he leaves Lorry?

iv. After leaving Lorry with Lucie and her daughter Carton goes to the La Force
prison. Then he goes to the pharmacy.

v. He buys several items from the pharmacy and the pharmacist requests to keep
many of them separate.

vi. He just kept walking throughout for a long time, only able to hear his own
echoing footsteps. Then slept on the river bank and woke up for the tribunal/
court martial.

vii. He remembers the words written on his father’s gravesite and thinks about it
all along.

Viii. On his father’s funeral at the gravesite.

ix. Who is the mysterious third person who has denounced Charles Darnay?

ix. Doctor Mannette, who objects that he denounced Darnay.

x. How has this denunciation come about?

x. It was in fact by Doctor Mannette who denounced the family name due to an
incident that happened with the members of the Evermonde family and the
Doctor who had refused to accept money and not speak of the crime that the
Evermonde brothers did and thus he was jailed by them. During his time he wrote
a note denouncing the Evermonde family name and thus was responsible for
Darnay’s denunciation.

2. Book 3 chapter 10

i. What does this chapter consist of?

i. This chapter mostly explains the back-story of Doctor Mannette’s


imprisonment.

ii. How do the two men who take Dr. Manette to the “patients” get him to enter
the carriage?

ii. They were armed men and thus the Doctor was forced to go in..

iii. Who are the two patients?

iii. The ‘patients’ are a young peasant boy and a woman who has a sick husband
and the woman is ‘in high fever’ tied to a bed.
iv. How has the boy received his wound?

iv. He was stabbed by a sword.

v. What is this boy’s fate?

v. He died cursing the two brothers and their family name and denouncing them.

vi. What becomes of his sister?

vi. She died about a week later.

vii. What important fact does Dr. Manette not learn?

vii. He is not able to learn the brother and sister’s name.

viii. To whom does Dr. Manette confide his secret?

viii. He confides his secret by writing a letter to his minister.

ix. How does Dr. Manette learn the name of the two evil brothers?

ix. The wife of the elder brother comes to Doctor Mannette and thus reveals their
name.

x. What is the result of the reading of this letter?

x. After the president of the tribunal reads the letter that denounced Darnay he
was condemned to death in 24 hours.

3. Book 3 chapters 11 and 12

i. What does Lucie ask of the crowd at the trial?

i. She asks the crowd to let her touch her husband for one last time.

ii. Sydney Carton help Lucie.


iii. What does Little Lucie say to Carton?

iii. She says to Carton that she know he will save her father.

v. He learns that she was the sister of those patients who were brought up by
Evermondes.

vi. What is ironic about this revelation?

vi. The thing ironic is that it reveals that she had personal motives when she
earlier said that individuals do not matter in the revolution.

v. What are Madame Defarge’s plans for Dr. Manette and Lucie?

vii. Madame Defarge plans to denounce both of them as well.

vii. What does Carton tell Lorry to do?

vii. He tells Lorry about the conversation he overheard in the wine shop and tells
him to hire a coach for 2 p.m in the next day.

viii. He gives him certificates that will allow Carton, Lucie, Little Lucie and the
Doctor to leave France.

England!”
