INTRODUCTION
Several factors make the behavior of students dynamic and different from each
other. These factors can be technical as well as psychological and controllable or
uncontrollable. The major challenge that students face is the difficulty to budget their
expenses and save a proportional amount every month for contingent events. Youth
have a significant influence and demand for various products and play an important role
in consumption as they do not have any basic financial commitments like paying rent,
bills and have enough purchasing power (Kim et., al,2016). Most of the students get their
monthly allowance from their parents and are answerable to them for their expenditure.
Higher family income can contribute majorly to the good academic performance of the
students but lower family income should not be an excuse for poor performance. But
since the coronavirus pandemic began, along with economic uncertainty, millennials
have cut back and focused more on essential expenses. All of these adjustments have
been an attempt to adapt to the changing economic landscape brought on by COVID-19.
The COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the lockdown and social distance requirements,
have altered consumer buying and shopping patterns. Consumers are learning to adapt
and form new habits. For example, if a customer is unable to go to the store, the store
comes to them. Also, consumers used to buy uniforms, school supplies, and shoes
before COVID-19 emerged, but now they buy things to keep themselves entertained
during the pandemic. Consumers are exposed to an increasing range of products and
information that have not been seen before. This leads to an increasing diversity of
consumer demand and challenges retailers to supply the right products according to
customer preferences. New habits and patterns of conduct have evolved, which are
likely to persist even after the crisis has ended. The needs of consumers have abruptly
changed. They began purchasing food and medical supplies for the upcoming months—
their behavior and shopping habits had shifted. A study conducted by Flatters and
Willmott (2009) identified several new trends that emerged during the crisis, including
the simplicity of demand as a result of restricted offers during the crisis, which tends to
persist post-crisis, with individuals purchasing simpler offerings with great value.
Research Questions
The research paper seeks to achieve its general objective of determining the changes
on the students’ spending habits during the pandemic and by focusing also on the
following specific objectives:
What are the transformations or changes of the students’ spending habits that
were brought by the pandemic?
What are the positive and negative impacts that influence the students’ attitudes?
What are the reasons for these change spending habits?
Is there a significant difference between before and during pandemic on the
spending habits of every student?
Hypothesis
To the students, this will give them a point of view as to how far does they had change
prior to their spending habits. It will also be responsible for reminding and educating the
student to budget, allot, invest or divert their money and allowances especially in times
of pandemic crisis.
To the business, since the study involves the student’s spending habits during the
Covid-19 pandemic, the entrepreneurs will also be benefited with regards to the data of
this study that will serve as a basis to come up with the business and in planning to the
product or to market.
To our dear future researchers, the future findings of this study will guide them and
create a foundation in a unique crisis situation that has never been studied before and
the exploratory nature of the study gives multiple indicators for future research.
