CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and other text types serve as means
of valuing other people; also how to use processing information strategies, different forms of adverbs and
conditionals for him/her to play an active part in a Chamber Theatre presentation.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learner proficiently plays an active part in a Chamber Theatre presentation through employing effective
verbal and non- verbal strategies based on the following criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery, Facial Expressions,
Style and Body Movements or Gestures.

Let us learn about the Neoclassical period and the focus of this unit which is the TWO Streams—English and
American Literature.

Neoclassical
 From the word “neo” means new + classical
 “period of Enlightenment”
 “age of reason”
 “era of logic”
Neoclassical Period
 Literature of the age is concerned with “nature” human nature, Supremacy of Reason
 Unity in the works of all writes.
 The age is known as classical age.
 Neoclassical literature is characterized by order, accuracy, and structure
 Some popular types of literature included: parody, essays, satire, letters, fables, melodrama, and
rhyming with couplets.
The Neoclassical period of literature can be divided into three distinct stages:
 The Restoration Period;
 The Augustan Period; and
 The Age of Johnson
Some of the notable authors on the restoration period:
 John Milton- represents the religious consciousness of the Puritans of England. He became blind, but
his blindness did not make him give up composition. He composed his masterpiece, Paradise Lost (a
long narrative poem), is about the fall of man, represented by the loss of paradise by Adam and Eve
and the consequences of that to man.
Activity:
Read the sonnet “On His Blindness” by John Milton on pages 111-112, then answer the Values: Life
Connection on page 112.

Getting information from various Print media
What is Print media?
 These are materials used to inform, instruct and motivate and even entertain readers.
Can you give an example of print media?
 Books or Textbooks, Newspapers/ Newsletters, Magazines, Brochures, Pamphlets, etc.
Now, you must learn that a brochure is a printed media text or an informative paper document often
used for sharing and promotional material. Brochures are also be referred to as flyers, pamphlets, or leaflets.
In addition, a brochure can also be used as to the following:
 A brochure can explain your organization's purpose and services;
 A brochure provides significant information about an organization or travel; and
 A brochure can educate people about a specific program or event.

Activity:
Below is an example of a Travel Brochure and answer the following 5Ws guide questions in a clean long
bond paper.

Guide questions:
1. Who are the target visitors?
2. What are some activities can a

3. Where is the location?
4. When will it happen? What is the
timeframe?
5. Why some tourist wanted to
experience all the activities?

Examine the given brochure and check if there are present text features.

Note: Do not be confused brochures with pamphlets. Both are different. However, both of them are used to
deliver relevant information. Brochure is a type of small magazine that contains pictures and information on a
product or a company while pamphlet is a thin book with only a few pages that gives information or an
opinion about something.

Remember that a brochure can be a valuable tool of explaining, answering questions, and educating or
promoting an event. Brochures are professional-looking, and with the text features, it can be greatly attract
and reach out a wide variety of audiences.
For you to get and understand an information, always be guided with the features of a brochure as
follow;
 Print Features: font, italics, bold print, colored print, bullets, titles, headings, subheadings, labels,
sidebars, text boxes, and captions
 Organizational Aids: table of contents, index, glossary, preface, pronunciation guide, and appendix
 Graphic Aids: diagrams, sketches, graphs, comparisons, figures, maps, charts, tables, cross-sections,
timelines, and overlays
 Illustrations: colored photographs, colored drawings, black and white photographs, black and white
drawings, labelled drawings, and enlarged photographs
