ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
* For each sequence find the general term (formula) or nth term.
1.) 2, 5, 8, 11, ……
Solution: Observe that the sequence has the same first differences, which means the sequence is linear in
nature. Using f(n) = an + b, our goal is to find the values of a & b, hence we just need two terms from
the sequence. We can assign f(1) = 2 where n = 1 (1st term) and f(2) = 5 where n = 2 (2nd term). Thus by
substitution, f(1) = a(1) + b = 2 and f(2) = a(2) + b = 5, hence after simplifying system of linear
equations in two unknowns; we have: a + b = 2 & 2a + b = 5. Then solving for the values of a & b using
elimination or substitution method, we will have a = 3 and b = – 1. Therefore, the general term (formula)
or nth term of the sequence is f(n) = 3n – 1.
TRY IT YOURSELF!!!
* For each item, identify the general or nth term of the sequence. Write your answers on the blank space
provided. You may write your solutions on a separate sheet of paper. God bless! (“,)
