Intvw Thank you for coming to today
show to talk to us about Air
Force One, the President’s private
airplane.
Expert It’s a pleasure!
Intvw So, what can you tell us about it?
Expert Well, technically it’s not one,
but one of two planes that carry
the President when on official
business. You can immediately
recognise them because of the
American flag and the words
‘United States of America’
written on them.
Intvw I see, and what is so special
about Air Force One?
Expert Well, each plane is very fast. It
goes at 620 miles per hour and
it can refuel in midair. It also has
very advanced communications
equipment, including 87 phones
and obviously a security system
to protect the President from
nuclear and other kinds of
attack.
Intvw And is the President
comfortable on board Air Force
One?
Expert Oh, yes! The airplane has three
levels, including a suite for the
President with a large office,
conference room and bathroom.
There are also two kitchens,
which can prepare food for 100
people, and there is even
a doctor permanently on board
if required.
Intvw What about the people who
travel with the President?
Expert There is plenty of room for them
on the plane too, as it is more
like a hotel than an airplane,
but it’s very expensive. It costs
£116,000 per hour to keep it in visitors each year. Built by William the Conqueror queens over the last five hundred years.

Int. How many countries actually
drive on the left and which
ones are they?
Ex. Well, Britain is one of about
25% of countries in the world
that drive on the left-hand side
of the road. Other countries
that do so include many
former British colonies such
as Australia, Sri Lanka and
South Africa, but also more
unexpected countries such as
Japan, Thailand and Indonesia!
Int. So, what is the reason for this
difference?
Ex. As most people are right-
handed, for much of history,
travellers stayed on the left
side of the road. For instance,
ancient Romans probably held
their horses’ reins with their
right hands and a whip with
their left so they didn’t hit
drivers of other chariots coming
towards them.
Int. This doesn’t however explain
why 75% of countries now drive
on the right-hand side of the
road...
