C. LESSON PROPER

Today’s lesson will help you understand

the Philippines and Japanese Military.

Did you know class that Japan had already

been at war in Manchuria (1931) and
China (1937) long before the Second
World War. Japanese military expansion
in the Asia-Pacific region had made
confrontation and war with the United
States increasingly certain.

His name is Douglas MacArthur, Ma’am!

Did you know him class?

Very Good!

Douglas MacArthur was an American

Military leader who served at General of
the Army for the United States, MacArthur
was born January 26, 1880, he died at American Military Leader, Ma’am!
Walter Reed Army Medical Center on
April 5, 1964.

Who is Douglas MacArthur?

Excellent!
Also, General Douglas MacArthur known
for his quotes “I Shall Return.”

In preparation for war, on July 26, 1941.

General Douglas MacArthur brought the
12,000 strong Philippine Scouts under his
command with the 16,000 American
soldiers stationed in the Philippines.

What can you observe about the picture?

Yes, correct. The Japanese military

launched a surprise attack in United States Bombing or Attacking, Ma’am!
Naval Base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.

This is the Pearl Harbour the America

aircraft were destroyed on the ground, the
attack on the Philippines started on
December 8, 1941.

On December 9, the silence of the night

was broken by the sounds of the zooming
warplanes that attacked the Port Area and
the ships at the piers in Manila. General
MacArthur declared Manila an open city
on December 25, 1941. Also, the Japanese
occupied Manila on January 2, 1942.

What year and date that Japanese occupied

Manila?
January 2, 1942, Ma’am!
Who declared Manila an open city?
General Douglas MacArthur, Ma’am!
But the Japanese did not respect Manila as
an open city, because they still dropped
bombs in Intramuros destroying San Juan
de Letran and the Central Bank Building,
Sto. Domingo Church and Sta. Catalina
College.

Look at this picture, this is the Intramuros

when Japanese continue to bomb the
Manila.

Do you want to experience that kind of Of course not, Ma’am!

war?

Good.

After the Pearl Harbour attack, the

Japanese landed at Aparri, Vigan without
any resistance. In the south, similar
landings were made in Davao and Jolo.
While invasion forces made a beachhead
at Legazpi.

What are the various areas of the Aparri

Philippines that Japan has continued to Vigan
bomb? Davao
Jolo
Legazpi, Ma’am!

Amazing!

MacArthur concentrated his troops on the

Bataan peninsula to await the relief of
reinforcements from the United States.
The Japanese succeeded in penetrating
Bataan’s first line of defense and form
Corregidor, MacArthur had no alternative
but to organize a slow and desperate
retreat down the peninsula.

On the night of March 11, 1942, General

MacArthur escaped Corregidor in PT-41
bound for Australia.

Corregidor is an island located at the

entrance of Manila Bay in the
southwestern part of Luzon in the
Philippines and is concerned part of the
province of Cavite.

76,000 starving and sick American and

Filipino defenders in Bataan surrendered
to the Japanese on April 9, 1942.

The falls of Bataan on April 9, and the fall

of Corregidor on May 6 of the same year
1942, were deeply mourned not only by
the Filipino people but also the Americans
and other peace-loving people of the
world.

The battle of Bataan exemplified the

Filipino American troops heroic stand and
resisted with rare encourage. Day and
night, the fierce fight between the
Japanese forces and the defenders of
Bataan raged with fury.

Island, Ma’am!

Entrance of Manila Bay, Ma’am!

76,000 Ma’am!

What the Corregidor is?

Located at?
How many American and Filipino sick?

The infamous Death March started in

Cabcabin, Mariveles on April 10, 1942.
Those who could not march because of
physical weakness due to hunger, fatigue
and sickness were either shot down or
bayoneted. So inhuman that defied human
sensibility, the pathetic event had been
called “Death March.”
