INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF THE LOWLANDS OF LUZON

Musikong Bumbong is a type of Filipino
marching band that employs bamboo-
based woodwind instruments. The
shapes and sizes resemble those of
brass band instruments, but the sounds
are quite different. The Musikong
Mumbong played in unison creates a
pleasing sound.

The bamboo instruments were invented
and founded by Felix Ramos. The band's
founding members were all known as
Katipuneros.

The band has changed names several

times, but it is now known as
Musikawayan, led by P/Lt. Col. Gilbert
M. Ramos, a fourth-generation
descendent of the band's founder.
Pangkat Kawayan, often known as the
"Philippine Singing Bamboos," is an
orchestra that performs music on non-
traditional bamboo instruments. Since
its inception in 1966, it has always been
made up of young pupils chosen from
Quezon City and Manila schools. The
group's musical instruments, which

pitches are played by each Angklung
shaker. It is frequently accompanied by
double bass, guitars, and percussion
instruments to make the sound more
intriguing and dynamic. To be able to
perform a wide range of musical pieces,
the Angklung should have more than
two and a half octaves, or roughly 30
pitches. The Angklung instruments can
also be found in other groups, such as
the Pangkat Kawayan.

The Hornbostel-Sachs system of musical instrument classification is
currently being taught in music classes. Curt Sachs (German organologist) and
Erich Moritz von Hornbostel (Austrian music researcher) established a system for
identifying musical instruments.

Idiophones make sound by vibrating their bodies in different ways, such as being
struck, scraped, rubbed, shook, and plucked.

Aerophones make sound by forcing a body of air to vibrate as a result of air being
blasted inside.

Chordophones make sound by vibrating a string or strings that can be plucked,

strummed, or played with a bow.

Membranophones use a vibrating stretched membrane that is tapped with hands

or sticks to make sound.

Electrophones make sounds that are produced by electricity
