Title: Osmosis
Aim: To observe some effects of osmosis
Materials/Apparatus:
1. 2 petri dishes
2. Sodium chloride (concentrated)
3. Distilled water
4. Potato
5. Ruler
6. Knife/scapel
7. Potato peeler
Procedure/Method:
1. Peel the potato
2. Measure 2 strips 1 cm wide and 3 cm long
3. Assess the texture of the strips by rubbing it between your fingers
4. Fill the two petri dishes half way. One petri dish must have sodium chloride and the other
petri dish must have distilled water
5. Place one potato strip in each petri dish and leave for 20 minutes
6. Record and measure all observations
Discussion:
1. Define osmosis
2. State how each potato strip felt when you assessed the texture
3. Describe the changes observed for each strip (size, appearance). Did it increase or
decrease in size? If so, by how much?
4. Explain why the changes occurred
Precautions: State at least two
Sources of Error: State at least two
Limitations: If any
Conclusion: Relate to the aim
