PROJECT:

Project RED (Reading Engagement and Differentiation)

PROJECT TITLE:
NAME OF PROPONENT: Annaliza M. Masangcay
SCHOOL: Pinagkawitan Integrated National High School
SCHOOL HEAD: Randy F. Falculan
Reading, as learning, remains a continuous process of trial,
PROBLEM/ repetition and development from basic up to higher stage. As a person
SITUATIONER/ reaches a certain level in the educative process, they are also expected to
PROJECT have improvement in their reading and comprehension level. By the
DESCRIPTION secondary grades, students were presumed to have acquired basic reading
skills. Over the last decade, researchers and policymakers pay less
attention to secondary-level remediation to focus on preventing the need for
it—by focusing on elementary level. Unfortunately, the need remains.
There are still a number of students who entered senior high school
with poor literacy skills. It is evident in the results of the recently
conducted PHIL-IRI among senior high school students of Pinagkawitan
Integrated National High School. There are still fourteen (14) out of three
hundred fifty (350) Grade 11 students who were categorized as struggling
readers. On the other hand, ten (10) out of three hundred thirty-four (334)
Grade 12 students belong to the same category. Those figures may not be
that high but considering that they are already senior high school students,
it is still alarming.
The social and economic consequences of not reading well can be
cumulative and profound: the failure to attain a high school diploma, a
barrier to higher education, underemployment or unemployment, and
difficulty in managing personal and family life. Years of failing at what is
deemed a hallmark of intelligence and worth can also leave struggling
readers with emotional consequences, such as anxiety and low self-esteem,
that affect personality and interpersonal relationships. Hence, it is without
doubt that reading comprehension finds great significance in the learning
areas and in the world of work. It should therefore be given attention and
action.
Pinagkawitan Integrated National High School which is known for
various reading projects remains an advocate of DepEd’s reading programs
such as 3Bs (Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa) and Every Child a Reader
Program. Through the leadership of the school head Mr. Randy Falculan,
head teachers and master teachers conducted a School Learning Action
Cell which encourage English and Filipino teachers to craft their own
reading intervention. As a participant of the said SLAC, the proponent
accept the challenge, not only of crafting an intervention but also of
implementing it once approved.

The focus of this intervention will be the Grade 12 students of
PINHS. The proponent come up with the title “Project RED (Reading
Engagement and Differentiation). Since students were given a chance to
choose their strand when they entered senior high school, it may be
effective if they will also be given a chance to choose the topic for their
reading materials based on their interest as they come from different
strand. As mentioned in a study made by Suzane Hidi entitled “Interest,
Reading and Learning: Theoretical Considerations”, interest is described as
a warm factor that serves as a motivation for text learning. If the learners
are interested with the materials they have on hand, they will be more
engaged to read which may result to a better reading habit. It is therefore
important not only to identify their reading level but also their learning
styles, wants and needs when it comes to reading. The rule simple to
complex will still be applied in preparing reading materials. The elements of
reading such as oral language, phonological awareness, phonics,
vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, as stated on DepEd’s 3Bs
initiative will also be considered. The researcher also plan to make an
action research about her proposed project to make a detailed
documentation and analysis of its effectivity.

This project aims to:

1. Identify the struggling readers through PHIL-IRI results.
OBJECTIVES: 2. Devise survey questionnaire to determine the reading interest of the
identified struggling readers.
3. Craft reading materials based on the interest and strands of the
readers and use them for intervention.
4. Assess the reading skills of the students after the intervention.
At the end of the project, the following are expected:
1. Utilize the developed questionnaire determining the reading interest
OUTPUT of the students.
2. Adopt the crafted reading materials for students with the same
reading interest.
3. Conduct continuous improvement for reading intervention program.
EXPECTED OUTCOME: This project will yield to:
1. Increase the number of instructional and independent readers from
334 to 344.
2. Submit a completed action research about the reading intervention.
