Lesson Idea Name: Recognizing the relationship between feelings and our actions.
Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade/Health education
Content Standard Addressed: HE2.1.d Recognize the relationship between feelings and behavior
and engage in activities that promote mental and emotional health.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and
1.3 Knowledge Constructor be able to do by the end of this lesson:

Students critically curate a variety of resources using Identify the way they are feeling and the
digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful learning ways those feelings might show up in how
experiences for themselves and others. they act.

Students curate information from digital resources

Discuss ways they see people act and identify
using a variety of tools and methods to
create collections of artifacts that how they may be feeling.
demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
How they can verbalize the ways they are
feeling to others.

How can I cope with my feelings?

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can talk about my feelings, how they make me feel, how to cope and the appropriate way to
react to them.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: PowerPoint
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

x Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will be sharing with them my book about our feelings and behaviors and how we should
appropriately cope with them. We can talk about different types of feelings, I may have
flashcards that show different feelings or show them an emoji chart and ask them if they
recognize the feeling and what actions they have seen people have when they have this
feeling (i.e. This person is sad, they cry when they are sad, I can help them by offering to sit
with them or to give them a hug). I also would like to discuss with them inappropriate ways
to deal with feelings, such as being angry and throwing things across the room or screaming
at others.

I would then release each student to write about any feeling they would like to, if they can’t
think of one, I would refer them to our flashcards or emoji chart and remind them that there
may be several students that choose the same feeling, but I want them to do their own work.
I would then give them a graphic organizer with 4-6 squares where they could write their text
(one to two sentences per square) as well as sketch out what they may like to include in their
book.

Once their graphic organizers are complete we would have a quick conference so I could
make sure they are on the right track. Then they could check out their laptop from our cart
and open PowerPoint and begin creating their slides based on their graphic organizer. Once
they have completed their slides they will show them to me, once I approve of it they will be
allowed time to work in the hall to record their voiceover to complete their book.

Once all student’s books are complete, I will give them a chance to share with either the class
or a small group. If a student doesn’t feel comfortable sharing with their peers I will allow
them to share just with me. Also, all students will share their documents with me digitally.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
Time-on-task with a continued focus on the learning goal: As I walk around the classroom, I
want to remind them of what my story focused on and what elements I expect their story to
have in it. I will also have our Learning Goals written on the Smartboard or the Whiteboard
so they can look up at them and understand what is expected of them. I may also have it
written on their graphic organizer.
We have worked in PowerPoint before, so they know how to create slides. While they are
creating their PowerPoint, I will remind them how much time they have to work on this
(perhaps 15 minutes at a time by having a visual timer on the Smartboard) and that I expect it

to take them no more than 3 sessions (one session to add text, one session to add graphics,
one session to record).

I will allow 15 minutes for group sharing of their documents, I think this will be quite
engaging because they will be simply listening to their group members books. There will be a
short 5 minutes for comments and then we will come together to talk as a group.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Using PowerPoint gives students a range of expressing their thoughts by giving them choices
in platform, feelings, and stories they write. I am not putting parameters on what they put in
their slides. Also, this is not a PowerPoint-specific assignment so if I know a student is more
proficient in a different technology then I am open to allowing them to use that technology if
that makes sense.
Reflecting on enhanced learning:
Students will have a chance to explore healthy ways to cope with feelings and how to help
identify a feeling when they come across it. I am allowing them voice and choice in the
feeling they want to do and the way they want to express their understanding through their
story. By using PowerPoint, they will gain extended knowledge of using technology and
continue to work on proficiency. The earlier we can get students comfortable with
technologies the more in-depth we can get when giving them assignments and allowing them
to create things. I look forward to creating my own story and helping them to create their
own, so many times students don’t get to talk through ways to cope with things appropriately
so I think this will give them the beginnings to know how to express themselves.
