1. If a card is drawn at random from a standard deck of cards, find the probability of
the following:
  a.  Drawing an ace or a queen or a king
SOLUTION:
P(ace)=4/52
P(queen)=4/52
P(king)=4/52
4/52+4/52+4/52=12/52
=3/13
  b.  Drawing a 4, 2, or 9
P(4)=4/52
P(2)=4/52
P(9)=4/52
4/52+4/52+4/52=12/52
=3/13
  c.  Drawing a red queen or a black ace
P(red queen)=2/52
P(black ace)=2/52
2/52+2/52= 4/52
=1/13

2. A card is drawn at random from a standard deck of cards. Find the probability of
the following:

 a.  a black card or a king
SOLUTION:
P(black)=26/52
P(king)=2/52

26/52+2/52= 28/52

=7/13
  b.  A queen or a diamond
SOLUTION:
P(Q)=4/52
P(D)=12/52
4/52+12/52=16/52
=4/13
  c.  A jack or a club
SOLUTION:
P(jack)=4/52
P(club)=12/52
4/52+12/52=16/52
=4/13

  d.  An ace or a king or a red card

SOLUTION:
P(ace)=4/52
P(king)=4/52
P(red)=22/52
4/52+4/52=8/52
8/52+22/52=30/52
=15/26

3. During Christmas Eve, the probability that a motorist will have an accident is
1/10. The probability of a motorist driving under the influence of alcohol is 3/10.
The probability of a motorist having an accident while driving under the influence
of alcohol is 1/5. What is the probability of a motorist driving under the influence
of alcohol or having an accident?

SOLUTION:
P(accident)=1/10
P(influence of alcohol)=3/10
So, P(accident or influence of alcohol)
=1/10+3/10
=4/20
=1/5

4. A card is selected at random with replacement from the following four cards: 8 of
diamonds, 9 of spades, 7 hearts, and 10 of clubs. Find the probability of choosing
the following:
a. a red and a 10

SOLUTION:

P(red)=26/52
P(10)=2/52

26/52*2/52= 52/52
=13/13 or 1

b. a black card and an 8

SOLUTION:

P(black)=26/52
P(8)=2/52

26/52+2/52= 52/52

=13/13 or 1

c. a 9 and a 10

SOLUTION:

P(9)=4/52
P(10)=4/52

4/52*4/52= 16/52

=4/13

d. an 8 and a 7

SOLUTION:

P(9)=4/52
P(10)=4/52

4/52*4/52= 16/52

=4/13

5.. A coin is tossed and a fair of die is rolled. What is the probability of the following
events:

a. Getting a head and a factor of 15?

SOLUTION:

P(head)=1/2
P(15)=3/6
1/2 *3/6=3 /12

=1/4

b. Getting a head and a multiple of 2?

SOLUTION:

P(head)=1/2
P(2)=1/6

1/2 *1/6
=1/12

c.Getting a tail and a multiple of 6?

SOLUTION:

P(tail)=1/2
P(6)=2/6
1/2 *2/6=2/12

=1/6

d.Getting a tail and an odd number?

SOLUTION:

P(tail)=1/2
P(odd number)=3/6

1/2*3/6=3/12

=1/4
