Sri Lanka as a developing country has seen a rapid development during the past few
decades. With ending of the three-decade long conflict, the development has reached
unprecedented levels. Colombo city as the capital and the economic hub of the country
has seen most of this growth.
However, with the ever increasing traffic congestion, it is decided to go ahead with a
“Light Rail Transit Project” starting from Colombo Fort to Malabe (Figure 1). The
project is supposed to be operational by 2025 and the project expects to shift a
considerable portion of private vehicle users to public transport.
