GENERAL PHYSICS 1
MODULE 2

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to release the amplitude, frequency, angular frequency,
period, displacement, velocity, and acceleration of oscillating systems.
.

LESSON OUTLINE:
1. Periodic Motion
2. Simple Harmonic Motion

LESSON:

Oscillation – One of the simplest system that can have periodic motion.

Spring force – the only horizontal force acting on the body.

Restoring force – the spring force that tends to restore it to the equilibrium position

Amplitude – the maximum magnitude of displacement from its equilibrium.

Period – the time of one cycle, in seconds

Frequency – the number of cycles in a unit of time. Unit in hertz

Formulas

1. w = 2 x pi x f
2. f = 1/t
3. t = 1/f
4. w = (2 x pi)/ t

Ex. 1

An ultrasonic transducer ( speaker) used for medical diagnosis oscillators at a f = 6.7 mhz. How much time does
oscillation take and what is the angular frequency?

Solution
T = 1/f = 1/ 6.7 x106 hz = 1.5 x 10 -7 us.

W = 2 x pi rad/cycle x f = 2 x 3.1416 x 6.7 x 10 6 hz or cycle/s

= 4.2 x 107 rad/s

Fx - the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement from equilibrium x

K – force constant is the constant of proportionality

Fx = -k x

Simple Harmonic Motion – the oscillation when the restoring force is proportional to the displacement from equilibrium

SHM = Fx / m

A = -k/m

Harmonic Oscillator – a body that undergoes simple harmonic motion

W = square root of k/m

Ex. 2 A force of 6 N causes a displacement of 0.03 m. We remove the spring balance and attach a 0.5 kg body to the
end, pull it a distance of 0.02 m., release it, and watch it oscillate. Find a. force constant, b. angular f, f and period.

Solution
A k = -Fx/x = -6N / 0.03 m = 200 N/m = Kg/s2

b. w = sqrt of k/m = 200 kg/s2 / 0.5 kg = 20 rad/s

f = w/ 2 pi = 20 rad/s / 2 x pi rad/cycle = 3.2 cycle/s or hz.

T = 1/f = 1/ 3.2 cycle/s
