ACTIVITY NO. 1

Direction: Answer the following questions.

Question no. 1: What reality of life is shown in the story?

Answer: The story has shown a lot of realities in life. We all have problems in life that we
need to face. Different problems in different people that also differs how heavy was it.
Everyone’s emotions and feelings are all valid. Not because your problem is worse than other
people, they don’t have the right to feel a pain. You don’t need other people to validate what
pain you must feel. A problem is a problem no matter how big or small it was. Another thing
that the story has shown was being optimistic in life. No matter how hard you are struggling,
you can find ways to feel positivity in life. A feeling of enlightenment, to feel that there is
someone that believes in you that you can make it. And this happiness will not only be found
on things that makes us happy, but also you can find joy in other people. Life goes on as well
as problems. You just have to find your own courage in order to address hardships in life.

Question no. 2: If you were Mabuti, how will you react to people’s negative comments to
you?

Answer: If I were Mabuti, I will do the same thing she does. I’m the only one who knows what I’m
going through, and they only said that because they don’t have any idea about it. I will still be optimist
and will show positivity in many ways. In that way, my feelings that is in pain will not affect them
because I don’t want them to feel bad about me. I want to surround my self with good things to lighten
up every single day.

Question no. 3: If you knew your teacher’s secret, will you react the same as the student who
said “Gaya ng kanyang ama?”

Answer: If I knew my teacher’s secret, I would also react the same as “gaya ng kanyang ama”. It is
because I am pertaining to the good things that her father good at. Her father is good at being doctor
and her daughter also wants to be the same good doctor just like him. For me that “gaya ng kanyang
ama” is the same “hinahangaan ko si Rizal”. Many people idolize Jose Rizal because of what he did in
our country to be at peace even though in real life, Rizal had a lot of affairs in different women. There
is nothing wrong to get an inspiration to other people even though they had wrong choices in life. It
only gets bad if the thing that you want to do are the choices that you know are wrong just because
people influenced you to do that. Inspired only by good deeds and don’t let wrong decisions ruin your
life.

Question no. 4: Is Matute’s creation of Mabuti moral?

Answer: In my own view, his creation is moral. He created the things that one must do and is right to
do. Mabuti shown not to stay being in burden with her own problem. She chose to light her day every
time for her students because one’s emotion can be passed to others and might cause down for them.
These challenges are part of our life, and these only makes us stronger and grow as a person that we
want to be.

Question no. 5: Comment on Mabuti’s support to her daughter’s dream of becoming a

doctor.

Answer: There is nothing wrong to support your children about what they want to be. Your role is to
guide them in their journey, in their choices and give pieces of advice for them to grow. It’s your child,
support where you feel they can be happy with. Your child has its own will to live, and only them can
feel what they really want is. A mother doesn’t need to seal or to chain them in their own hands.
Everyone has the right to choose and a mother knows what is best for her child.

Question no. 6: Does Matute elevate or not women’s role in society through Mabuti?

Answer: Yes, Matute does elevate women’s role in the society. Bravery and courage cannot be seen
through gender. We have our own strength, and it can be shown in different ways. Women can do
what men can do. There is equality among different gender. Not because you’re a man, you don’t need
comfort. We all need a help, support, or cheer for everyone. We all cry, we do have problems, and we
all can make it no matter what we are going through.
