A dream come true

F = Fernando Montano, N = Narrator

F: My name is Fernando Montano. I’m from Colombia and I am a ballet dancer with the

Royal Ballet.

N: Fernando Montano is First Artist at the Royal Ballet in London, one of the most famous

ballet companies in the world.

But his road to success was not an easy one. As a child Fernando lived in the city of

Cali in Colombia. He lived in a poor area of the city, and life was difficult for him. But

Fernando always had a dream.

F: I remember I was like three or four years old when I first told my mum that I would like

to be a ballet dancer.

N: At the age of twelve, Fernando began studying at the only ballet school in Colombia.

Later he won a scholarship to Cuba, to continue his studies. While he was in Cuba, the

Director of the English National Ballet School saw him dance. She invited him to come

to London for an audition, and later he joined the Royal Ballet.

When he came to London, Fernando also needed to learn English

F: When I came to the UK I didn’t speak English at all..

N: Fernando took English classes in his spare time. Usually after a hard day’s training at

the Royal Ballet. The life of a ballet dancer is always difficult. Fernando trains for

several hours a day, and spends hours in the gym.

F: We have to look at what we eat, we have to look at our fitness, so I also spend, on top

of my training as a ballet dancer I spend a couple of hours at the gym, because as a

male dancer I have to be fit and being able to lift all the girls and do all those tricks we

do.

Today after years of hard work I’m incredibly proud to say that I’m the first Colombian

ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet.

As a person, um, I have so many dreams and hopes and, and at the moment, ah, the

number one in that list is being, become a pri- a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet.

N: Fernando is always trying to learn new things in life. He draws, he acts, he models

clothes. But there is one thing that is always the most important for him.

F: Dance is my passion it means everything to me.
