two things, namely, Number and Distance. Number covers Singular (Single)
and Plural (Plural) while Distance covers range or time (far or near).
12

2. Pronoun
Pronouns in the language (pronouns) are words used for English nouns,
these nouns can be humans, animals, places, and concepts. The purpose of using
pronouns can be caused by many things such as to make it shorter, a name is not
mentioned repeatedly in a sentence, and the effectiveness of a sentence. Pronouns
generally replace the position of nouns, namely as subject, object, or complement.
The noun that is the reference for a pronoun is called the antecedent.
Antecedent comes from Latin which consists of two words, namely: ante means
before and cedo means to go.
Example :
16
2. Pronoun
20
a) Kata Ganti Pribadi (Kata Ganti Sendiri)
Personal Pronoun terdiri dari 4 bentuk, yaitu: Personal Pronoun as Subject,
as Object, Possessive (dimiliki), dan Nominative posesive (nominative property).
contoh:
21
1. As a subject
Subject pronouns are used when the pronoun is the subject of the
sentence. You can remember subject pronouns easily by filling in the
blank subject space for a simple sentence.
Example: …… did the job
I, you, they, we, he, she, and it all fit inti the blank.
2. As on object
Object pronouns are used everywhere else ( direct object, indirect
object, object of the preposition ). Object pronouns are me, you, him,
her, it, us, and them.
Example: - Andi talked to him
Are you talking to me ?
b. Reflexive pronoun
Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that are a reflection of the pronoun itself.
These pronouns include myself, yourself, herself, himself, himself,
ourselves, yourselves, and themselves. These words are used when the
subject and object in a sentence are the same person.
Example: – I hit myself with a stick
Jack hits himself with a hammer
But keep in mind, if the subject and object are different people, then the
usual noun/person pronouns are used (me, he, se, it, us, and them ).
- I hit her (Diana) with a stick
- Jack hit him (John) with a stick
c. Demonstrative pronoun
Demonstrative pronouns are demonstrative pronouns that belong to
definite pronouns, where we already know something that is being
replaced clearly.
22
23
jelas
26
In general, the noun that is replaced is a thing, person or thing. In
Indonesian, there are only two demonstrative pronouns that are only
influenced by the distance of the object from us. The pronouns of
demonstrative pronouns in Indonesian are 'ini' (close distance) and 'itu'
(far distance), while in English they use this, that, these and those. The
following will explain the difference.
Example:
1. This (pronoun for something close to the singular number).
This is Zahira, my best friend in the office.
I like this cake. Where do you buy it?
2. That (a pronoun for something remote with a singular
number).
Is that for me?
I don't like that new girlfriend of Andi.
3. These (pronoun for something close to the plural).
These books are so interesting.
Tell those kids to go away from my room.
4. Those (pronouns for something far away with a plural
number).
Those are my nephews.
Did Ihsan create those?
d. Relative pronoun
Relative pronouns are pronouns that function to connect sentences,
which explain nouns. Nouns here can be people, animals, or things.
When using a relative pronoun, it will definitely not be separated from
the relative clause. A relative clause consists of a relative pronoun
followed by an independent sentence complete with a subject and a
verb.
Example:
1. The boy who is playing football on the field is my neighbor.
28
-keterangan
e. Interrogative pronoun
is a pronoun used to make or ask a question. These pronouns include who,
whose, whom, what, where, which and when.
Example :
1. Who drove you home yesterday?
( siapa yang mengantarmu pulang kemarin? )
2. With whom does she go to the movies?
( dengan siapakah dia (pr) pergi ke bioskop? )
f. Possessive pronoun
Here are possessive pronouns with some example sentences. Note that the
possessive pronoun is never placed before a noun.
29
Its -
Who merupakan subjek dari verb “is playing” dan membentuk relative clause
yang menerangkan subjek “boy”.
Contoh:
1. Siapa yang mengantarmu pulang kemarin?
2. Dengan siapa dia pergi ke bioskop?
Namun, saat ini, kata yang tidak lagi digunakan dalam bahasa sehari-
hari.
30
Dia
31
There is no proprietary pronoun for its, so we can't say "The book is its". The
possessive pronoun is also often placed at the end of a sentence and is usually
stressed. “This is my book” can have a fairly factual meaning, but “This book
is mine” emphasizes who owns the book.
g. Reciprocal pronoun
It is a pronoun that shows an interacting relationship. Reciprocal pronouns are
pronouns that express a reciprocal (interrelated) relationship between two or
more individuals.
Each other → ‘Mutual’ for two people/things
example:
1. David and Rosa love each other.
(David dan Rosa mencintai satu sama lain.)
One another → ‘Mutual’ for more than two people or things
Example:
1. Those teenage girls are talking about one another. (Gadis-gadis
remaja itu membicarakan satu sama lain.)
h. Quantifier / indefinite
The indefinite pronouns ( everybody/ anybody/ somebody/ all/ each/ every/
some/ none/ one ) do not substitute for specific nouns but function themselves
as nouns.
Example: - everyone can do that.
- None of this dresses fit me.
32
describe a noun or pronoun which can be a person, place, animal, object or
abstract concept (thing).
