(Test 2, Part 2, Question 2)
Answer A: Satisfactory answer

Dear Simon,

Many thanks for your e-mail. I’m so glad you are coming to Mar del Plata next month! I was willing to see you.

As regards music, have to say I don’t know where to start. Mar del Plata offers a wide variety of festival for
everyone. There is well-know club names as “Argentinian Jazz” where people can enjoy this amazing music
gender. What make this place special is that only local bands can play in it and also you don’t have to spend
much. However, during the weekend, the government organises different concerts to promote music culture for
free. they are astonishing.

On the other hand, as you asked about museums, this city has a new exhibition named “Modern Museum” which
contains huge scultures, colourful painting. If I were you, I would definitely visit it. Also, this exhibition is not
expensive. If you are eighteen years old and if you are a student, the museum makes you a discount.

That’s all for now, I am very excited you are coming to Mar del Plata. Please if you have any question, please let
me know.

All the best

Janine

This email gives most of the information required, but does not answer the Simon’s question: How can we make the
best of the week? The points are covered in clearly organised paragraphs and Simon would be reassured by all the
information about music and museums that the student provides.

It shows a good range of structure and vocabulary, but there are some errors. There are a couple of errors which affect
meaning, such as I was willing to see you in the introduction and However in the second paragraph.

The style is on the whole appropriately informal, but the student also uses some inappropriate formal language, such as
Many thanks for your email and If you have any questions…

This is an example of a satisfactory email at this level.

(Test 2, Part 2, Question 2)
Answer B: Unsatisfactory answer

Dear Simon,

Many thanks for the letter, soray I couldn’t reply sooner, but I was very busy studying. I’m very looking foward
next month for your visit!

As a first activity, we could go to the beach that is near your hotel, if you want to. I thought you would like it since
you are very keen on visiting new beaches. Also, I might invite some of my friends so you can meet them and
spend the day watching movies and playing games.

If you like museums, we could visit the new one that is near my house, it’s very interesting, but not so big. I’ve
planned a visit to the shopping mall, wich also have a cinema where we could watch any movie that you want!

Examiner comments
The student does not include all the required content points, so Simon would not be fully informed. They mention some
plans for the week (going to the beach and meeting their friends, going to the cinema), but they do not give Simon any
information about going to see music and only mention a museum briefly and without any detail.

There are a few errors but they do not obscure meaning.

This answer is 124 words long, which is below the minimum number of 140.

This is an example of an unsatisfactory email at this level.

(Test X, Part X, Question X)
Answer C: Unsatisfactory answer

Hey Pat,

is everything all right? I got your e-Mail about your project. I’m very happy to help you because I think that’s
a very important topic. More people should start thinking about climate change, greenhouse effect and all the
danger just caused by our wasteful lifestyle. I think saving energy is the first step towards a big, positive change.
My town always reminds us of our grandchildren who also will want to live in a beautful world, enjoying their life
like we do. If it doesn’t work with the emotional possibility you also could try to make energy more expensive.
It’s actually very easy to save money by reducing energy waste. Just always make sure you have switched the
lights off before leaving a room and never forget to unplug your charging set after charging anything! Another
option is education! Maybe teachers have to talk more about climate change and all the dangers and effects on
our beautiful environment. In our school we had an oral exam about climate change. So we have had to make a
lot of researches on the subject because it was a debate. I hope that most of the pupils are better informed now
because the grade is very important… and it’s quite difficult to get good grades in Bavaria!

I wish you success with your project! Hope I help you with this mail.

Cheers,

Michelle!

Examiner comments
This email doesn’t exactly address the questions as the writer discussed the importance of energy saving and gives
examples of things people could do without actually saying whether her town has tried to do anything other than putting
emotional pressure on residents to look after the town for the future. She does talk about getting informed, but not ways
of saving energy.

There are some good examples of language, but the email is not paragraphed well although the email conventions
are followed.

This is not really satisfactory answer at this level because the writer has not addressed the task properly.
