Explanations

This Norm was prepared by the Sub-Committee 412.1 "Telecommunication cables and lines" in
K 412 "electrical cables and lines" of the German Electro-technical Commission in DIN and
VDE(DKE).

For outer cables to which this Norm (VDE-regulations) relate, issues the approval for laying the
single wire black-red-printed VDE-Identification marks or for use of the statutorily protected
VDE-cable mark, according to DIN 40 010, by the VDE-Inspection laboratory, Merianstrasse 28,
6050 Offenbach am Main, after their verification and on application.

The editing of DIN VDE 0816 was necessary because safe substantive supplementation
Imodifications were called for.

The important ones are:

1) Modification of the reference diameter for the outer marking through figures
"Telephone"
2) Adoption of the zinc coating for thick zinc plated steel wires and steel tapes with
relevant tests
3) Modification of the insulation resistance for filled cable
4) Modification of the transport regulations for spools up to size 1250
5) Modification of the preferably core or pair numbers as well as the
6) Adoption of Norms or standards which were hitherto ''under preparation" and are
now valid as regulations and/or guidelines..

In addition, editorial supplementation and alterations were to be incorporated which were

necessary because of the editing carried out.

It was further decided by the Sub-Committee 412.1 to find out DIN VDE 0816 safe handling into
three parts. Besides the following Norm DIN VDE 0816 Part 2, the following were the other
