Module 1
THE CONCEPT OF DEVELOPMENT

LESSON 1. DEFINITIONS AND MEASURES OF DEVELOPMENT

Activity

Let us pause for a while and reflect—how did you picture development of the “good life”
during the following stages of your life.

1. As a child For me as a child I considered myself developed when I

started to know how to fluently speak in our mother tongue
language and learn basically in reading and writing.

2. As teen-ager In the stage of my teenage life I myself developed how to

communicate to others especially to my family, friend and
loved ones. I started to understand about puberty stage and
personal hygiene.

1. As a young adult As a young adult I begun to considered myself independently

in some common things. Not at all times but I know I can
decide for my own life, for what is good and worst for
myself.

2. As a more mature adult For me, as a more mature adult I will learn how to manage
(if you no longer myself properly. I’m going to be more hands on to my future
consider yourself a plans for myself and sure to know I might learn how to work
“young adult” with respect to others and also for having it in myself.
Analysis

1. What do you feel while doing the activity?

- While doing the activity it makes me feel a little more focused on what will be the
things that I am going to answer but later on thankfully I can still manage how to answer
it myself.

2. What was your insight/learning while doing the activity?

- I learned to know and develop myself properly. It makes me recalls all the process of
my growing before and the things that developed within me.

Application

1. Describe the three development decades in 10 to 15 sentences. (20 points) Refer to the
following rubric.

Development decades consist of three. The first development decade was in last
1960, development this time was measure through GNP or Gross National Product. It
refers to the total money value of goods and services of a country every year. During
this time International financial institutions invested have been invested in some
programs to even more develop the world. For me the first development decade are
more about the money value. Following is the second development decade (1970).
During this decade development are mainly visible in humans or the improvement of
the quality of life of the individual. It is stated here that a man himself became the
measure of development. The presence of (1) enough food, clothing, footwear and
shelter, (2) meaningful employment, (3) equality and (4) education means that the
said country is developing.

Finally is the third development decade (1980). This period was characterized by
further refinements and focus. It brought in a realignment of priorities among
international funding institutions along the lines of Seers’ thought. From
infrastructure, investments were channeled to agriculture, education, and health. The
following are the landmark concerns under the third development decade (1) women
in development, (2) environment, (3) social dimensions, (4) indigenous peoples, lastly
(5) sustainable development.
2. Describe your community in 150-200 words. You may include the buildings,
houses, roads, people, politicians, environment, etc. Describe whether your
community is underdeveloped, developing or developed. Cite the reason/s.

I can say that our community in Makilala is still developing. In my point of view
developed communities are more proper, discipline and well-managed. For me still
our community is in the process for our progress, yet there are some government
projects but still it is not totally done. People there are nice but not all are respectful
and discipline, there are still few people who don’t follow some strict regulation
especially in times during this pandemic.

We are still practicing to be more organized and adapting our new normal world.
There are many quite family affected during those times. Our way in education
learning was also affected too, many students especially me on those times have hard
time studying on a modular learning. Also there are few of our buildings got damages
due to the last earthquake happened. It was never quite easy of having continues
problems in our community, so that all I can say is that our community are still
developing.
