Collective Benefits of Pillars of

Islam
Importance of pillars of Islam:
* The structure of Islam, like any other structure is based on pillars
which are certain practices in Islam. Just as the strength and stability
of a structure is based upon its pillars, so does the strength and
stability of Islam. Therefore, Muslims should make them duty-bound
with the pillars of Islam.
* The five pillars constitute the basic requirements of Islamic
practices and are accepted by Muslims globally, irrespective of
ethnic, regional or sectarian differences.
* They are mentioned in the Qur‟an several times but not altogether
in a single Surah.
* The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has declared that
Islam is founded on 5 fundamental principles, which are called
pillars of Islam and they are as under

Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):
1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and
Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (.)‫ﷺ‬
.2To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and
perfectly.
3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .
4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)
5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.
(Sahih Bukhari,, Hadith no.8)

LIFE AND LIVING

Islam has Five Main Pillars, namely:

LIFE AND LIVING

1) Iman (Faith) is demonstrated through Declaration of Faith i.e Kalma-e-Tayyabah &
Kalimah Shahadat:

LIFE AND LIVING

The Shahadah (declaration of faith) consists of two statements, which we can call the first
and the second Shahadahs.
1) The first Shahadah expresses tawhid, through which, one bears witness that "There is
no god but Allah," while
2) The second Shahadah expresses prophecy, through which, one testifies that
"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

* This First Pillar of Islam is the fundamental act, upon which all Islamic activities depend.
By proclaiming this Declaration of Faith, one implicitly believes in the Six Fundamental
Articles of Faith including Existence of Allah, Angels, Messengers, Revealed Books,
Hereafter and Destiny.
* Basically, Declaration of Faith is absolutely necessary for entering the fold of Islam.
However, Islam is not genuine and sincere if it remains simply verbal.
* So the remaining Four Pillars are also incumbent upon a Muslim, and if he/she does not
observe them, his / her Islam is incomplete and unacceptable.
(Maududi, Understanding Islamic Civilization, p:70)

Objective & Purposes of Kalmah Tayyabah:

Parable of Kalmah-e-Tayyabah vs Kalmah-e-Khabisah:

‫س َوا ٓ ِء‬

“Do you not see how Allah compares a good word to a good tree? Its root is firm
and its branches reach the sky. Always˺ yielding its fruit in every season by the
Will of its Lord. This is how Allah sets forth parables for the people, so perhaps
they will be mindful. And the parable of an evil word is that of an evil tree,
uprooted from the earth, having no stability. Allah makes the believers steadfast
with the firm Word ˹of faith˺ in this worldly life and the Hereafter. And Allah
leaves the wrongdoers to stray. For Allah does what He wills. ”
LIFE AND LIVING
(Qur’an‫‏‬14:24-27, Kaskas, 2016)
* Kalmah Tayyabah is here likened to a noble tree, whose roots are
firmly fixed in the earth and whose branches reach to the sky; and all
the while it continues to yield abundant fruit, as commanded by its
Lord.
* On the other hand, there is the Kalmah Khabisah, that is, an evil or
corrupt word, a false belief and a baseless saying, which may be likened
to a self-seeded plant, growing in poor, shallow earth and easily plucked
out with a single pull because its roots have no firm base.
So striking and beautiful is the parable that the more you reflect on it the
more you will come to absorb the lessons that can be learnt from it.

2. Salat (To Establish
Obligatory Prayer)

• “Salat”‫‏‬is a Qur‟anic term for “prayer”.

• It means, “supplication,‫‏‬attending‫‏‬to,‫‏‬praying‫‏‬to,‫‏‬or‫‏‬
Literally seeking‫‏‬nearness‫‏‬to‫‏‬Allah”.

• “The Ritual Prayer of Muslims which is performed 5

times a day while facing towards Ka’bah as an
obligatory religious duty according to the instructions
Technically given by the Prophet Muhamamd (peace be upon him)
regarding its full procedure”.

LIFE AND LIVING

* The commandment to offer Salat is mentioned 700 times in Qur‟an:

َ ‫ٱىش ِم ِع‬
ِٞ ۟ ُ‫ٱس َمع‬
َّ ‫٘ا ٍَ َع‬ ْ َٗ َ‫ٱىزم َٰ٘ة‬ ۟ ُ ‫صيَ ٰ٘ةَ َٗ َءات‬

(43:‫)‏اىبقشة‬
“And establish the prayer and give zakat and bow down with those who bow down”
(Qur’an‫‏‬2:43, Shaikh & Khatri, 2007)

* The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has taught us practically the way of Salat
(prayer), its essentials, recitals, times and rak‟ahs and its full procedure.

“ ٌْ ‫ُ َؤرّ ُِْ ىَ ُن‬ٞ‫صالَةُ فَ ْي‬ َّ ‫ث اى‬ ِ ‫ض َش‬ َ ُ ‫ أ‬ِّٜ َُ٘ ُ ‫ت‬ْٝ َ ‫صيُّ٘ا َم ََا َسأ‬

“Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should
pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer”.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith no.631)

LIFE AND LIVING

* Salat (Prayer) is a duty after Faith (Iman).
* It is obligatory on every adult and sane Muslim whether man or woman,
rich or poor, healthy or sick, in journey or at home without any excuse.
* It is the essence of all Islamic practices and deeds.
* That‟s why, Islam has stressed over and over again the importance of
prayer and emphasized it as basic principle of Islam.

* The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Salat the “center‫‏‬
pole” of Islam, presenting the image of a tent with a single pole holding it up
in the middle and with other poles as secondary supports.
“ ُ‫َاه َِ ْال ِج َهاد‬

(Jami’‫‏‬Tirmidhi, Hadith no.2616)

LIFE AND LIVING

Objectives & Purposes of Salaah (Prayer):

Prayer is a Source of Avoiding Evil

* Salat (prayer) is a compulsory form of worship, which is like an
exercise towards which man is attracted with interest and willingness. He
offers it continually, so that his life may be free from all diseases and the
body may be healthy and strong. The Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the
Prophet both are the open proofs of these realities.
(Al- Ghazali, 1989,Muslim’s‫‏‬character‫‏‬,‫‏‬p.‫‏‬3)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LNdSvC7RSn9AInBYpkVPgDRNxw9UZjBL/view)

* To keep away from evil, wickedness and to purify from bad deeds are also realities of
the prayer.
* When Allah commanded the compulsory prayers to be established, He stated its
wisdom in this way:
(Qur’an‫‏‬29:45, Shaikh & Khatri, 2007)
LIFE AND LIVING
A Way to Success:

...ُ٘‫ صالتٌٖ خاشع‬ٜ‫ِ ٌٕ ف‬ٝ‫قذ افيح اىَؤٍُْ٘ اىز‬

(Qur’an‫‏‬23:9, Shaikh & Khatri, 2007)
3. Zakat (To Pay
Obligatory Charity)

• Zakat is a Qur‟anic term for “monetary charity”.

• It means, “to‫‏‬purify‫‏‬and‫‏‬to‫‏‬develop”.
Literally

• “It is an act of monetary worship, according to which,

every Muslim who possesses property equal to or
exceeding a fixed Nisab, has to give away, at the
Technically prescribed rate, a portion of it to the deserving poor
and‫‏‬needy‫‏‬people”.
LIFE AND LIVING
Heads of Expenditure (Masarifeen-e-Zakat) of Zakat:
According to above-mentioned verse 60 of Surah Tawbah, there are following 8
heads of expenditure of zakat:

LIFE AND LIVING (60:‫)‏‏ت٘بت‬

1. Needy

5.
Ransoming

3.

4. Winning

Hearts to
Islam 8.
Hospitality
of the way-
farers
Objectives & Purposes of Zakah (Obligatory Charity)
Kindness & Generosity:
* Zakat has been made compulsory on the eligible (Sahib-e-Nisab) persons.
* It is not merely a tax that is collected from the pockets of the people, but its
foremost purpose is to sow the seeds of kindness. sympathy and benevolence, and
to provide a chance of introduction among the various sections of the society and
to establish the relationship of love and friendliness.
* To clean Oneself from the worldly impurities and to raise the standard of the
society to the heights of decency and purity are the wisdom behind the payment of
Zakat.

(Al- Ghazali,‫‏‬Muslim’s‫‏‬Character‫‏‬,‫‏‬p. 3
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LNdSvC7RSn9AInBYpkVPgDRNxw9UZjBL/view)

LIFE AND LIVING

* This is a sort of financial devotion. Zakat has an obvious social
relevance. Purification of an individual‟s possessions takes place
through helping others.
* Every Muslim who has a particular amount of wealth, should
give an amount of money after passing a whole year as prescribed
by Shari’ah to those who are entitled to receive zakat.

LIFE AND LIVING

4. Saum (To Observe
Obligatory Fast )

• Saum is a Qur‟anic term for “Fast”.

Literally • “to‫‏‬abstain‫‏‬from‫‏‬something‫‏‬and‫‏‬to‫‏‬give‫‏‬it‫‏‬up”

• “Saum )fast) implies “abstaining from eating, drinking,

Technically
smoking and gratifying sex-desire‫‏‬etc”

• The fast begins with sehri meal which is taken a little while
before the dim beginning of dawn and it is commendable to
Timing break the fast just after the sunset.

LIFE AND LIVING

* The Qur‟an has enjoined it
and provided necessary
instructions concerning it and
also described the merits and
blessings of Ramadan.
* The word Fasting
‫صيَ ٍام‬ِ mentioned 10 times in
Quran in 10 different verses.

(Fasting In Quran.

fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave
foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him,
he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting." The Prophet ( )‫ﷺ‬added, "By Him in
Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting
person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says
about the fasting person), 'He has left his food, drink and desires for My
sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the
reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.“
(Sahih al-Bukhari , Hadith no. 1894)

LIFE AND LIVING

Objectives & Purposes of Saum (Fasting)
Developing Virtues & Controlling Evil Desires:
* Islam has made fasting compulsory. But it does not mean that people should keep
away from their evil desires, emotions and other prohibited things for a fixed period
only. Fasting is a means to develop self-control over our low desires even after the end
of Ramadan.
(Al- Ghazali,‫‏‬Muslim’s‫‏‬Character‫‏‬,‫‏‬p.‫‏‬3
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LNdSvC7RSn9AInBYpkVPgDRNxw9UZjBL/view)

* Fasting is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslim to devote themselves to

their faith, get closer to Allah and learn patience and compassion. It‟s about nourishing
your soul, rather than only focusing on your physical body. It‟s goal is developing
virtues, performing good deeds, and controlling our sinful passions.
(What is Ramadan and why is it so important to the Islamic faith?

LIFE AND LIVING
Compassion & Sympathy:
Moreover, fasting is a means for compassion for the poor and gratitude
for the favors of Allah. When we feel the pain of hunger, we have to
remember that many people in the world go hungry without choosing to
do so. We should empathize with their pain and act within our
capabilities to help them. Reflecting on the situation of those in need will
also generate gratitude and contentment for the blessings in our lives.

5. Hajj (To Perform
Obligatory Pilgrimage)

• Hajj is a Qur‟anic term for “Pilgrimage”.

• It means, “to‫‏‬visit”‫‏‬or‫“‏‬to‫‏‬have‫‏‬the‫‏‬intention‫‏‬of‫‏‬going‫‏‬
Literally on‫‏‬pilgrimage”.

• “It implies that all embracing worship in which a

Muslim visits the Holy Ka‟abah at Makkah and
Technically performs prescribed practices”.

LIFE AND LIVING

* The word Hajj ‫ حج‬is
mentioned 12 times in Quran
in 8 different verses. But as a
topic it is mentioned in few
other verses as well.
* Following is the
commandment given by the
Holy Qur‟an about
performing Hajj:

LIFE AND LIVING

Objectives & Purposes of Hajj (Obligatory Pilgrimage):
Self-control:
Giving commands about this compulsory worship, Allah states:
۟ ُ‫سىقَ َو ََل ِجدَا َل ِفً ْٱل َح ّج ۗ َو َها تَ ْفعَل‬

‫ُوا فَإِ هى َخي َْس ه‬ ۟ ‫َوتَزَ هود‬
“The pilgrimage shall take place in the months appointed for it. And
whoever undertakes the pilgrimage in those [months] shall, while on
pilgrimage, abstain from vulgar speech, from all wicked conduct, and
from quarrelling; and whatever good you may do, God is aware of it.
And make provision for yourselves - but, verily, the best of all provisions
is God-consciousness: remain, then, conscious of Me, O you who are
endowed with insight”.
(Qur’an‫‏‬2:197, Asad, 1980)

Uniformity & Brotherhood:
* During the Hajj, men must wear the same dress (long white robes),
which is another symbol of equality.
* Complexion only secondarily; primarily it describes attitudes and
actions. They display a spirit of international unity and brotherhood.
* Hajj brings followers of diverse backgrounds together in worship.
Worshiping Allah together makes Muslims feel that they are not alone but
part of something greater than themselves.
* Pilgrims are asked to leave everything behind them. Individuals must
concentrate on their relationship with Allah.
* Being in an isolated place with a feeling of oneness and a chance to
rethink issues provides an opportunity for self-examination and
restructuring of attitudes and goals.

Impact of Prayer on Personality and Social Development
* Prayer is not only the first manifestation of faith but in fact a logical outcome of
it. One whose heart is brimful of faith, his head is bound to feel an urge for
obedience and obeisance. Prayer is in fact the name of an inner condition which
finds expression in the form of prayer. Prayer is to faith, what light and heat is to
sun. That prayer is vital to faith is not a mere presumption.
* It is a guardian of the faith. If prayer is established, obedience of other injunctions
will follow. Prayer has the same importance in faith as heart has in the human
body. If heart has the strength, the warmth and the vitality, the flow of blood
continues to other parts of the body and keeps them alive and active. But if heart
looses life and beat, other parts become lifeless and inactive.

of Allah.
* Pilgrimage also imparts faith in the Unity of Allah.
* Pilgrimage is also a reminder of the Satanic traps.
* Pilgrimage imparts a singular lesson in religious faith and morality.
Beside other virtues, it fosters in the pilgrims love of Allah,
perseverance, resignation to Divine Will, contentment, trust in Allah,
suppression of lust for material wealth, fellow-sympathy and
equality.

Collective Benefits of Pillars of Islam:
• Each Pillar plays a vital role in invoking a sense of submission to Allah
and in its perfection.
• Each Pillar plays a role of its own and cannot be substituted by another.
• Jointly they forge a frame of mind that finds a complete satisfaction in
Islam.
• They bestow upon a person, a heart that seeks nothing but Divine Will.
• They give him a spirit which ceaselessly struggles for Divine pleasure.
• Thus prepared for submission unto Allah he is always on the ready to
comply with His injunctions. Through constant labour, his heart is so
cultured that no religious guidance goes waste in its soil. It readily accepts
the seed sown in it and starts the process of nourishing it.
(Islahi, Islam at a Glance. P.83
https://www.islamicstudies.info/literature/glance.htm)
Summary

All these pillars teaches believer, self-control, piousness, humility, humbleness, modesty,

high morals, caring and love, and purify Muslims so much so that they attain moral

perfection both inner and outward, while people see it and when no one is watching

them, from their tongue and what they have in their heart. They completely eliminate

hypocrisy and Riya (show off) and instill real character and noble qualities.
