Use West Guide pages 385-393 and 399 (345-351 in old book) to guide you in answering

the following questions.

1. What does the following in-text citation mean if you see it in an essay? (35)

It means the work was extracted from page 35 of the printed source.

2. If you see the above citation in an essay, what can you expect to find on the

essay’s Works Cited page?

A referenced print source bearing full citation information.

3. A citation in MLA format goes at the end of the sentence in which the source was

cited. Does it go before the end punctuation (usually a period) or after it?

The citation goes before the end punctuation mark

4. What does the following citation mean? (Jones 136-39, 145).

Implies that multiple pages have been used from the cited source.

5. What does this citation mean? (Taylor 54; Thomas 327).

Indicates that two works are cited at the same time.

6. What information do you cite in your in-text citation if there is no listed author?

An abbreviated title of the article cited in parenthesis and should correspond to the full

name of the article as it will be referenced in the work cited page.

7. List three of the citations in the sample Lolita essay and explain what each one

means.

Example: This means that the source was written by someone with the
last name of Thomas and that the quote or paraphrase came
(Thomas 327) from page 327.

( Kuzmanovich 7) Shows the last name of the author and that the information
was paraphrased from page 7
(“Banned . . .”) An in-text citation for a page obtained from a website.

article/journal.

8. What does abbreviation et al. mean?

An abbreviation Latin which means “and others”. Used when there more than three authors

of the same source/book.

9. What does the abbreviation “Ed.” mean?

A short form of “Editors” to imply that the book has editors instead of authors.

11. Which lines get indented in a Works Cited page?

Subsequent lines ; after the first line is flushed to the left. (Hanging indent.)

12. What word must appear in the citation if it is from the internet?

URLs and DOIs should appear including the access date.

13. What word must appear in the citation if it is from a print book?

Name of the publisher.
