Matter

Unit 1 - Properties used

to group and store materials

Properties of Matter

Classifying Matter Based

on their Properties

Let's Review!!

What is matter?

What are the forms of matter?

What are the properties of matter?

Instructional Focus Lesson # 4

Identify the properties of matter being described.

1- The result of the gravitational force acting on a body of mass directed towards
the center of earth.

2- The amount of material present in a given volume of a substance.

3- The amount of space that an object occupies.

4- The amount of material in an object and is directly related to the number and
types on atoms present in the object.

Lesson 1
Classifying Different Materials Based on their Properties

Unit 1- Characteristics of Matter

Essential Questions

a- Why do we need to classify materials?

b- How are materials classified according to their properties?

c- How can decay materials affect living things and the environment?

Direction: Classify the following materials according to their common properties

Towel
Plastic Grocery Bag
Soil
Sponge
Spoon
Styrofoam

Bullet notes

- Materials found in the environment can be classified according to their

properties.
- Classifying Matter Based on the Ability to absorb water
- Absorbent materials have the ability of to absorb liquid
- Ex: woods can absorb water. Hence, objects that are made up of wood like paper
and tissue can absorb water.

- Non- absorbent materials do not absorb liquid

- Ex: Styrofoam, zip lock bag, wax paper, aluminum foil, sandwich wrap.

Liquid has the ability to pass through narrow spaces without the help of other
forces (gravity).

- Materials has the property of being porous (porosity)

- Porous materials have the small holes that allow air or liquid to pass freely.

- Non-porous materials DOES NOT allow water to pass through.

- The amount of liquid being absorbed is determined by the equation:

amount of liquid - amount of liquid = Amount of

before soaking after soaking absorbed liquid

DIrection: Write A if the material is absorbent and

NA if the material is non-absorbent

1- Sponge A

2- Plastic ball NA

3- Styrofoam A

4- Clothes A

5- Flowers? A

Classifying Matter Based on the Ability to Float or Sink

- Aluminum
- Iron
- Cork

Classifying Materials Based on the Ability to undergo Decay

Vocabulary terms
- Decomposition
- Segregate
- Garbage
- Biodegradable

Classify Materials Found in School As To Biodegradable And Non-biodegradable

Biodegradable Non-biodegradable
Tissue paper Plastic bottle
Cookies,biscuits wrappers
Leftover food Plastic noodle cups

Integration to Health
Effects of Decaying Materials to One's Health and the Enviroment

- Why are toxic or poisonous materials dangerous to out health?

- What is the effect of bacteria to our health?

- What should you do to protect yourself from bacteria?

Life Lesson

Cite materials that can be harmful if not handled properly.

In summary

a- Why do we need to classify materials?

Classifying materials means identifying each material according to its subject,
b- How are materials classified according to their properties?
Materials can be described and classified according to the following physical
properties: size, shape, mass, texture, color, and material composition.
c- How can decay materials affect living things and the environment?
