Physical and Chemical

Properties of Matter: Useful

and Harmful Materials
Lesson Objectives
• Define the meaning of matter.
• Differentiate physical and chemical properties of
matter.
• Determine whether material is useful or harmful
Definition of terms
• Matter- is a substance made up of various types of
particles that occupies physical space and has
inertia.
• Physical property- is any property that is
measurable,
• Whose value describes a state of a physical system.
• Chemical property- is a characteristics of a
particular substance that can be observed in a
chemical reaction.
EXPLORE
• Instruction: Answer the following questions

1. In your own words, what is matter?

2. Give at least 5 examples of useful and harmful
materials
EXPLAIN!
• What is matter?
• Matter is a substance made up of various types of
particles that occupies physical space and has mass.
According to the principles of modern physics, the
various types of particles each have a specific mass
and size.
Properties of Matter
• Physical property- is a characteristic of a substance
that can be observed or measured without
changing the identity of the substance. It includes
color, hardness, malleability, solubility, electrical
conductivity, density, melting point, and boiling
point.
• Chemical property- describe its potential to
undergo some chemical change or reaction by
virtue of its composition. The elements, electrons,
and bonds that are present give the matter
potential for chemical change.
What are the useful and harmful materials
• Useful materials are materials that serve their purpose
and do not harm human health and environment.
These may have properties such as flexibility,
hardness, color, elasticity, and resistance to water,
heat, or acid. Most of the useful materials can be
reused and recycled. For example, a container for
solid or liquid is repurposed as flower vase.
• Harmful materials are materials that may bring
hazards. Heat of combustion is normally measured
calorimetrically, but it can also be calculated with
good accuracy from the elemental composition of the
coal. It is the heat given off when a given amount of
coal is completely burned. These materials may bring
harm to your health, environment, and other
organisms when not used properly.
Activity 1
Direction: List the useful materials and harmful materials below, and answer the
follow-up questions afterward.

Old newspapers Pesticides Broken glass

Candy wrappers Plastic bottles Paint
Cans Straw Gas
Bleach

1. How do materials become useful and harmful?

2. What are the possible outcomes of the harmful materials you
listed when they are not used properly?
3. What are the things you can make on the useful materials you
listed?
Activity 2
Directions: Complete the paragraph using the words in the box.

Purpose Hazardous Harmful

Useful Painful Reused

Many materials and substances are at home

and in school, but they can be if not use
properly. Materials are considered useful when they serve
the . Some useful materials can be
, for example, an empty container can be used as a
house decor. But some materials can be like
a broken glass that can cause injury.
Activity 3
Direction: Arrange the jumbled words and identify whether it is
useful or harmful material. Write the answer on the box provided.
