These are body movements that
have direct translation into words.

e.g.

B. Illustrators
These are used to accent, to emphasize or to
reinforce words. If someone is giving you

the left side to mean its going to left side.
The purpose is to give instruction.

e.g.

What time is it?
1. Body Movements
C. Regulators
These are signs showing control of the back and forth
natures of speaking and listening.
It include the head nods, hand gesture, shifts in
posture and other body movements that signal the
beginning and end of interaction.

e.g.
An instructor may point the student giving him the

D. Display of Feelings

intense his emotion is; as in tight hug may signify an
intimate relationship.

E. Adapters
These are non-verbal ways used in adapting to
the communication situation. Usually, these
are implied meanings that the speaker would
like to mean.

e.g.
a woman visited a friend’s house and when
she was there, she started picking up scattered
things on the floor. She implied that her friend
could hardly clean her house. This is her
adaptive means to mean the idea that she
wants to convey.

4. Attractiveness
Physical attributes of a person may mean
something to the people around her.

Researchers have found out that women

perceived as attractive have more dates,
receive higher grades in college, persuade
males with greater ease, receive lighter
court decisions. Men and women who are
perceived to be attractive are more
sensitive, kind, strong, sociable, and
interesting.
5. Body adornment
It involves the form of clothing, make-up,
jewelry, and hairstyle.

According to a survey, women notice first

the clothes, then the eyes followed by the
body built.

Men notice first the body built, then face

then the dress. For instance, an applicant
who is dressed appropriately might likewise
be hired than those who are not.

4. Attractiveness explained through the following:

5. Body adornment A. Intimate distance

B. Personal distance
6. Space and distance C. Social distance
D. Public distance
7. Touch
8. Time
6. Space and distance

A) Intimate distance

–In this situation, people are in direct contact with

each other or are in no more than 18 inches apart
as in a mother and child. People feel irritated or
intimidated when this intimate distance is
violated especially if the other person is not
supposed to be there.

B)Personal distance

- People may stay anywhere from

18 inches to 4 feet from each other as in casual
and personal conversations. This distance is close
enough to see each other’s reactions but fair
enough not to encroach in the person’s intimate
distance.
6. Space and distance

C) Social distance

– When talking to persons unknown to the

speaker, he must keep a distance of 4 to 12 feet.

This is mostly done in impersonal business and

social gatherings or interviews which is expected
to be more formal.

D) Public distance

– It is a distance of more than 12 feet typically

used in public speaking. There is a need for the
speaker to speak loudly and to use exaggerated
gestures for the audience to understand what he
is trying to convey. Furthermore, there is a
necessity for the availability of gadgets to aid in
sound projection.
7. Touch
The kind of touch used in communication reflects
meaning about the relationship between the
sender and the receiver.

The more intense the relationship, the more

frequent and more intimate the touch.

8. Time
There are two kinds of people based on time; punctual and late.

e.g.
a student who is always late in class conveys the message that he
is not interested in the subject or he does not respect the teacher
