A. INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE: “Rizal law” Republic Act 1425
Instructions: Read the “RIZAL LAW” R.A 1425. After that, answer the following questions.
1.Who is Rizal? Why did he became the symbol of heroism in the Philippines?
Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda or also known as Dr. Jose Rizal is a hero of the Philippines, a
linguist, traveler, talented, and genius man of honor. In addition, he is also an Ophthalmologist, a poet, a novelist,
philosopher, a historian and can speak 22 different languages. He was born in Calamba, Laguna, on June 19, 1861.
He was baptized in the Catholic church in Calamba.
Jose Rizal became the symbol of heroism in the Philippines because he fought for freedom in a silent but powerful
way. He expressed his love for the Philippines through his novels, essays and articles rather than through the use of
force or aggression.
Studying Rizal’s life and works maybe is not that necessary for us to learn nowadays. However, I still find it important
because I think it has a beautiful or great impact in society. Since is not just about learning the novels he created but it
is also about understanding how those novels helped in fighting against colonizers in the past.
3.Give 10 reasons why you should study life and works of Rizal.
Writing exercise:
1. Compare and contrast the views of those in favor and against RA 1425, considering the context of the 1950s; Would
similar arguments still have force today?
It is mandatory to include this Act in the curriculum of all universities, schools to spread awareness about the life and
work of Jose Rizal.
The Rizal Law was restricted by the Christian church, however, today it is being implemented again.
2. Reflect on your secondary education: Did your school comply with RA 1425? How effective is the Rizal law in instilling
patriotism among high school students(secondary)?
I strongly believe that my secondary school has undoubtedly complied with RA 1425.
Rizal Law is very effective in instilling patriotism in secondary school students, not only in them but in all young
people, because it inspires and influencing us to be obedient to the law, selfless and socially responsible , all for the
sake of the country. Rizal Law also empowers an individual to put his/her country and fellowmen first, before one’s
self in everything he/she does.
Writing exercise:
Yes, I am doing what a hero does but not especially like Dr. Jose Rizal who died because he fought against the
Spaniards using only his Novels. However, I believe that a hero does not always have to wear a costume or always
risk his life and save the lives of others to be called a hero. I just help other people as much as I can like helping an
elderly person to cross the road, helping a man or woman to carry his heavy things, respect all people and of course
when a woman is being abused, I will talk to the abuser by responding politely, the abuser may change their
behaviour or realize that their verbal attacks have no good results and remove themselves from the situation.
In addition, I study hard for my parents and for myself and it is not easy to study hard but for them I will do everything
so that their support for me will not be wasted.
Instruction: Using the table below, compare and contrast the characteristics of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio and Emilio
Aguinaldo.

ACTIVITY NO.5
D. THE PHILIPPINE CONDITION DURING THE 19TH CENTURY AS RIZAL’S CONTEXT
ACTIVITY NO.6
D. THE PHILIPPINE CONDITION DURING THE 19TH CENTURY AS RIZAL’S CONTEXT
Film: "Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?" directed by Eddie Romero (1976)
Guide Questions:
The film has really interpreted the situation of the Philippines during the 19 th century. It was shown that the priest were
powerful that time for they have close connections with the Spanish government as well as they have enough wealth.
Filipinos were living in fear because of the cruelty of the Spaniards that is why, some of them were living in
mountainous area to hide themselves.
•Based on your reading and class discussion, what can you say about the film's representation of the nineteenth
century?
Precisely accurate, they really studied the quality and the original way of life in the Philippines in the 19 th century, as
well as the way of speaking, the dialects are accurate. Slavery was clearly present, as was misuse of authority. They
also showed the way of execution of prisoners and imprisoning innocent people without trial which is very common at
that time, because without money you have no power at that time. Being friends with the priest and the government,
on the other hand, is advantageous since they may be able to assist you in times of need. Priests are often
said to be more powerful than government officials due to their length of service.
What is the main question that the film seeks to answer? What is your own reflection based on the film and your
understanding?
“Who is the real Filipino?” is often asked in the movie. The said question received several answers, including one that
a Filipino is someone who fought for his country, and another that Filipinos are those who were born and raised in the
Philippines. Since then, the answer to the question seems vague. This clearly shows that Filipinos were still confused
about their identity in the nineteenth century.
The Philippines had many obstacles in the 19th century, including human rights violations, slavery, and unjust rule. The
Spanish controlled the population, and many individuals were killed under their rule. But, on the other hand, such
problems only revealed that Filipinos have a strong sense of what is right for them and can stand for it. The Filipinos
were forced to revolutionize and end their way of life through the unjust actions of powerful people. Through this, the
Filipino people came together for a common goal and achieved independence from the Spanish colony that they had
fought for a long time. I discovered that the 19 th century was not only about overcoming a tyrannical ruler, but also
about overcoming the task of nation building.
ACTIVITY 7
J. NOLI ME TANGERE K. ELFILIBUSTERISMO
I honestly believe that Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or
restraint, a choice of how the way you want to live for your life not just live free. Freedom is a state of our mind That
indicates your mind without fear or compulsion of safety in our life.
Dr. Jose Rizal also believe that freedom is won not through the sword but through the people making themselves
worthy of it. However, I believe that fighting for your freedom is one of the things you will not regret in your life.
Additionally, freedom is the choice to live what one wants, live where one wants, eat by one’s own choice and know
what one’s heart desires without any restrictions from anyone.
The Novel is not just talking bout lack of freedom in the Philippines when it comes to politics, but life in general. The
novel portrayed the lack of freedom through the narration of Crisostomo Ibarra’s life. Spaniard want to control us and
it was also included in the novel about the slavery of the Spaniard to the Filipino’s.
So Rizal remains relevant to the 21 st century Filipino. Unfortunately, this also means that many of the social ills he
fought against continue to plague Philippine society, more than a century after his martyrdom. The unequal treatment
of colonized countries. Foreign powers, such as the U.S., treat our archipelago as its own backyard that needs to be
fortified from enemies, which explains the presence of American troops through the Visiting Forces Agreement,
Balikatan Exercises, and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement .

ACTIVITY 10
L. JOSE RIZAL AND PHILIPPINE NATIONALISM (BAYANI and KABAYANIHAN)
In life, people may come and go, some will be remembered and some will be forgotten. But one thing I am sure of, I
will never forget the persons who I can also call as my second parents. My teachers.
For me, My Hero is My Teachers because being a teacher is kinda timeless role that inspired students to pursue their
passion and to emphasize. Teachers are heroes because of their dedication and perseverance to make teaching and
learning possible for all. However, all I can say is that I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
