Concept Notes

Conflict is a struggle or a problem between opposing characters or opposing forces. Some


stories can have multiple conflicts. It can be external or internal conflict.
External conflict
Refers to the opposition between an individual and other characters/forces.

3 kinds of External coflict


Man vs Man
Person vs Society
Person vs Nature
1. Man vs Man
It is the opposition between the main character and the other character/s in the story.

Example: Peter Parker and Green Goblin Scene.

2. Person vs Society
This type of conflict happens when the character has a problem with the society in which
they live, including laws or beliefs of groups

Example: Katnis Everdeen (from The Hunger Games) try to put a stop to the corrupt Capitol’s
rule over their state of Panem.

3. Person vs Nature
This is when the main characters problem is a natural force, like a predatory animal, a
typhoon, or a contagious disease.

Example: During a vacation, a family encounters a huge tsunami

Internal conflict
Refers to an inner conflict within the main character . This kind of conflict is called Person
vs Self which happens within the character’s mind.
Example: In the first TOY STORY film Buzz Lightyear represents the core internal conflict of
the movie. He’s a toy who doesn’t realize he is a toy.

Directions: Examine the video clips. Then, identify the conflict if it is EXTERNAL (Man vs
Man, Person vs Society, Person vs Nature) or INTERNAL (Person vs Self).

Directions: From your answers in activity 2, think of an appropriate solution for each conflict.

1. Movie: Despicable Me 3
Question: If you were at the scene of Gru and Balthazar Batt, You saw them fighting each
other.Imagine that Balthazar is just bullying Gru, what would you do?

A. Confront the bully by fighting back.


B. Tell the Police about it so they can help Gru make peace with Balthazar.
C. Let Balthazar bully again.

2. Movie: The pool


Question: Imagine you are the boyfriend and you saw the crocodile coming out of the pool, what
would you do?

A. Leave your girlfriend with the crocodile.


B. Find a way to escape with your girlfriend.
C. Cry for help.

3. Movie: Moana
Question: If you are Moana’s friend, what will you do to help her?

A. Ignore her feelings.


B. Leave her alone.
C.Try to encourage her and offer a shoulder to cry on.

4. Movie: Coco
Question: If you were Miguelthat really loves and wants to pursue music, but your family is
against it. what would you do to convince them?

A. Talk with your family about the situation and convince them to support your decisions
B. Listen to your parents and forget about your dream.
C. Ignore them.

VI. Values Integration

In life we encounter problems and we must find the perfect solution. As people always say
there is always solution to every problem. Always be humble, be teachable and always keep
learning.
