Work-Based Learning & Summer Internships

HEAVY HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION
The C.W. Matthews Work-Based Learning and Summer PAID Internships are designed for those students who
are interested in going into construction after graduation. These internships give a high school student the ability to:

• Get a glimpse of what a career looks like in Heavy Highway (Horizontal) Construction.
• Gain specific training and skills that make them more employable after graduation.
• Earn a great part-time income while still in high school.
Our internships can be categorized into 3 different pathways.
1. Construction Path:
BE A PART OF BUILDING GEORGIA’S ROADS FROM THE GROUND UP!
a. Placement in one of our operational road construction divisions.
Typical Tasks in this pathway:
• Flagging traffic.
• Use of hand and power tools.
• Set up and maintenance of erosion control.
• Loading and unloading of materials.
• Shoveling and raking dirt, gravel, and asphalt.
• General clean up around job site.
• Checking and maintaining grade stakes.
• Set up and maintenance of all traffic control aids.
• Operating small equipment such as a skid steer.
• General maintenance of all equipment and tools.
2. Manufacturing Path:
LEARN HOW TO CREATE THE ASPHALT & CONCRETE FOR GEORGIA’S ROADS!
a. Placement at one of our 27 Asphalt Plants or 5 Concrete Plants.
Typical Tasks in this pathway:
• Unloading material
• Shoveling asphalt
• Operating small equipment such as skid steers
• General maintenance of plant, equipment, and tools.
• Depending on aptitude, the opportunity to learn basic operation skills on CAT 966 Loader and overall plant
operation.
3. Heavy Equipment Maintenance Path:
BE A PART OF THE TEAM THAT SERVICES OUR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ROAD & EQUIPMENT FLEET!
***THIS PATH IS LIMITED FOR THOSE LOCATED NEAR TO OUR MARIETTA OFFICE ONLY. ***
a. Placement at our Marietta maintenance & repair shop.
Typical Tasks in this pathway:
• Assisting mechanics.
• Assist with service & maintenance on road & equipment fleet.
• Daily upkeep & maintenance of shop area.
• Parts currier.

Students that are selected MUST:

❖ Have a driver’s license.
❖ Be at least 17 years old.
❖ Have a dependable vehicle to get them to the job site every day.
❖ Have a desire for a career in the construction industry.
❖ Have a GREAT ATTITUDE, STRONG WORK ETHIC & A TEACHABLE SPIRIT
❖ Have a teacher recommendation (preferably from construction/trades/CTAE teacher/WBL Coordinator)
❖ Be able to pass a drug screen and physical.
