At the end of the lesson the students can:

1. Explain the meaning of the “teaching profession” and what it
means to be a teacher.
2. Describe the roles of a teacher in the teaching-learning process of
the learners
3. Cite qualities that a professional teacher should possess

Introduction

Teaching is a timeless profession. It is the premise of all other professions. Great

teachers plant seeds that produce competent physicians, good accountants, excellent
engineers, and other professions that eventually expected to be good citizens. The
importance of teachers as an architect of our future generation’s demands not only the
best, and the most competent individuals of society are allowed to qualify for this
noble profession.
In this lesson, you will explore the different roles of a teacher in the teaching learning
process.

Guide Questions:

1. What makes you think that those qualities mentioned above define a
good teacher?

What defines a good teacher is the product of their masterpieces in educating

new seeds that would sprout out of their comfort zones and spread the wisdom
throughout the real world where knowledge is expensive and if you have it your on
top.

3
The above mentioned skills are basic things that a teacher personally
developing even before they become educators. This skills would describe them as
whole being a teacher. As a teacher it’s not just about the knowledge that you share to
the students but most important is the values you show to them which serves as a
motivation. It’s an accomplishment for a teacher to hear this phrase “someday I want
to be like you Ma’am”. Once a teacher having good relationship with students
respect is automatically given without being ask because of the mindset of students
where they can say that “this teacher is a treasure that we should value”.

It is a rewarding part for teacher to see the progress of their students to watch
students excel through their motivations. A teacher pushes the student to bring out the
very best they have inside. To show the world that they have something to offer to
make this world a better place to live. It’s not just pure academic knowledge a teacher
should taught but also the most important thing which is the values. Values is
something worth bragging through humility through that values all good qualities a
teacher have would be a motivation for students to look up to.

A teacher would not just focus on the mistakes a student made but in making
they excel from the person they was before. Show love and everything would fall in
to place with your students and the most victorious part is paid back by “respect”
without asking it automatically given when students appreciate you as a teacher.

2. Assessing yourself now, do you think you already have those

qualities? Why?

Where I am today, what am I doing, what am I thinking, and this mindset? I

confidently say most of those qualities I still don’t have it. It not an easy thing to
acquire all those positive qualities there are things in life which is hard to have and
good qualities are one of them. You cannot say that you have those qualities if only
when you are in front of everyone and in back you would complain that things aren’t
done correctly the way you like it to be.

Teaching takes a lot of hard work specially in building skills to attract students
to give you respect and to make them trust you. But behind everything I choose to be
a teacher and I will stand for it ,I will fight for it and make the effort to possess those
good qualities to become the best of best of me as a future educator who is in charge
in educating ,sharing , and giving knowledge to my students .

As of today I am still not so ready and confident enough in everything I will

be doing with regards to this profession I am pursuing but one thing I can promise I
would do everything to be an educator whom students would look up to like a person
they would want to be in the future too.

4
3. As a future teacher, what are you going to do to acquire and possess
qualities of a good teacher?

Teacher is on the top list of important profession, why? Obviously without

teachers there is not doctors, engineers, nurse, architect and etc. Every knowledge
started from teacher that is why there is a saying that states “ teacher is the second
mother we have “, which is basically true since school is considered as home since
we stay there for like 8 hours each day and we only have the teacher which guides us.
The type of knowledge one student have originates from the kind of teacher he/she
have during schooldays.

Self-finding and finding my purpose and the right motivation to be dedicated

in this kind of work is what I need to have in order to possess those skills mentioned.
It is also an accomplishment for me someday to see my students succeed and living
their purpose just like me. Since I am the role model to them I need to show them the
right things to do in order to follow the right path towards success.

I need to show them that in life there is one thing that is certain and that is
change but one things never change is the values they have inside which formed from
the day they were born molded as they grow up and gather experiences. What is more
important is that you do well in everything with love and care for other people.

What is teaching?

5
Various definitions have been given to teaching. Check below how scholars
defined teaching.

Nilsen and Albertalli (2002), teaching

in its broadest sense are the process
whereby a teacher guides a learner or a Schlechty (2004) defines teaching as
group of learners to a an art of inducing students to behave

learning, including an attempt to
Desforges (1995) defines teaching as induce students to so behave.

Melby (1994) states that teaching is
largely in classrooms with the
not merely dispensing subject or
deliberate intention of lesson-having, but an art which
promoting their learning. involves the student in the teaching

Frimpong (1990) defined teaching as given the chance to participate fully
in the process – that the teacher

the behavior of the learner(s)’.

Thring, (2001) says pouring out knowledge is not teaching. Hearing lessons is not
teaching …… teaching is getting at the heart and mind so that the learner values
learning and to believe that learning is possible in his/her own case.

Smith (2004) sees teaching as the process of carrying out activities that experience
has shown to be effective in getting students to learn. He goes on to say that
teaching is that which results in learning – learning is the responsibility of the
teacher and that if students do not learn, it is the fault of the teacher. He capped his
statements on teaching by stating that teaching is undertaking certain ethical tasks
or activities, the intention of which is to induce learning.

Innovation Education and Research www.ijier.net Vol. 1-03, 2013

From the above definitions of teaching, it can be inferred that there are two
essential forms of institutionalized teaching: (a) formal teaching in which teacher

6
guides a teaching-learning cycle with limited student involvement; and (b) informal
teaching in which the teacher acts as a guide, facilitator, mentor or motivator, and
participation by a student is very high.

Roles of a Teacher
Teachers play very important and demanding tasks in the learners’ developmental
process. They are more than entrusted with the task of molding the character of the
learners and making them productive members of society. They represent role models
for the learners who are still in their physical and mental development, especially
those who are in their early stages. If teachers perform their role well, the learners
will realize the importance of the positive traits and values being imparted to him.
Let us review the different roles of the teachers.

your illustration in the box provided below.

11
B. Today I learned that

That a teacher has a lot of roles it could be in personal matters or the roles we
have in the community. In every roles there would be standards to follow. See? Being
a teacher is never an easy job since we are not just dealing for ourselves to be better
but also we need to consider the people around us. And we need to mind that in every
decision we need to do we should seek for the better outcome for our students and be
better in every way. And I we do mistakes think it’s normal and everyone do mistakes
all the time what is more important is to not let your mistakes decide your next
moves.

Lesson Challenges in Teaching

2

At the end of the lesson the students can:

1. Describe the various challenges of the teachers in facilitating the teaching

learning process.

Introduction

Teaching is perhaps the oldest profession in the world. Knowledge and skills have
been passed before, regardless of tradition, race, and society. The only difference

12
today is the existence of learning institutions and is done by certain qualified
personnel in a given subject of study.
However, just like any other job, challenges, and benefits are prevalent in
teaching. In this lesson, you will learn the different challenges that the teaching force
experienced in performing their duty.

Make it Personal

ways of overcoming it. Write a summary of the interview using the matrix

Let us Analyze

Guide Questions:

a. From the interview you have conducted, what do you think is the most
pressing concern of the teacher? Why?

Basing on my interview the most pressing concern a teacher have is the lack
of resources they have in school. Not everyone can have books to read since the
books is limited and the number of students is way more than the number of books. It
is a burden for most of them on how to address this kind of situation because it is a
long process before the new supplies of books can be granted in the school.

14
b. Do you agree with the strategy used by the teacher in addressing the
difficulty? Why?

Yes I agree with their strategy, because it is the smartest way to do in

addressing such problem of lacking in books and learning materials in school. It is an
extra efforts from teachers to think on the situation of their children and find ways on
how to help them in the best way that they can do as educators.

c. If you are the teacher, how are you going to overcome the challenge?

If I am the teacher, I would do the same in the first solution I can think and second is
to find ways on how the school can produce an extra books and learning materials and
even technological devices if it is possible.

Challenges in Teaching
The significant contributions of the teachers in the life of the learners are
undeniable. They have all the opportunities to impact the lives of the learners.
However, parallel to this opportunities are the challenges they are facing inside the
classrooms.
Let us take a look at the distinctive classroom challenges that the teachers are
confronting within the classroom.

Multicultural classrooms

15
1. Language Barrier
✓ The main difference between multicultural and ordinary classroom is a
language barrier. Coming from various countries and even city districts,
children can speak the same language, but they can never understand each
other.
✓ Learners get into the environment where a teacher uses a language they do not
understand at all. Their task is not just to understand what a teacher says but
also to gain new information – twice harder than in a normal classroom.

2. Domination of different learning styles

✓ learners absorb information in a variety of ways
✓ A teacher should give their students all the learning styles (auditory, visual,
tactile, etc.) to better understand the information.

3. Non- verbal behavior

✓ Body language of another ethnic group is difficult sometimes to
understand
✓ When the teacher is not conscious of the non-verbal behaviors characteristic of
the society where his learners are from, this may lead to several troubles and
difficulty of right interpretation.

16
✓ Examples of non-verbal behaviors are raised hands, eye contact, and head nods

4. Presenting one topic from different perspectives

✓ restricted number of school lessons does not always provide the opportunity
for the teacher to present topics different prospective independent on the
nationality or ethnic tribe

5. Diversity of extracurricular activities

✓ It is the teacher’s job to provide different extracurricular activities that would
accustomed learners familiar with new traditions, a way of life relationships in
this modern society

6. Teaching communication skills

✓ Apart from difficulties in using a foreign language, students may feel
uncomfortable or unable to express their views because of the fear not to be
understood.
✓ Teachers should inspire students to discuss different issues, speak up their
minds on a range of topics, and foster a friendly classroom atmosphere.

7. Constant work with parents

✓ Communication with parents can help understand how a learner feels in a new
environment, has been raised from childhood, what tradition influenced his
view of the world, etc.

Learner – centered teaching

✓ Designs of the classrooms are not appropriate design for the learner-centered
teaching methods
✓ Some teachers are in a rush to implement the approach without a thorough
understanding of the principles and a careful plan of teaching.
✓ It may be the case that while many teachers are personally committed to
serving learners’ needs, the structure of their organization and policies may not
accommodate or, in some cases, hinder the desire to be more learners centered.
✓ Teachers must try to manage all learners’ activities at once, which can be
challenging when learners are working on different stages of the identical
project

17
✓ Because the teacher does not deliver instructions to all learners at once, some
learners may miss vital facts
✓ Some learners choose to work alone; thus group work can become challenging
Sources: http://www.languageinindia.com/nov2017/annielearnercentredclassfinal.pdf
https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1247962.pdf

Multi–grade classes

✓ Needs further planning of learning materials for the curriculum.

✓ Needs a more thorough analysis of learners' developmental features at all age
levels participating in the class, approaches, and strategies that are successful
and feasible within a multi-grade class.
✓ More investment in the organization of the classroom as a learning
environment.
✓ More meticulous and systematic record-keeping to keep track of student
progress, curriculum development and implementation is required.

Source: https://www.slideshare.net/Pilmathe2001/the-challenges-of-multigrade-teaching

18
ICT Integration

✓ Concerns on the availability of technology infrastructure

✓ Lack of technical support
✓ Lack of teacher collaboration and pedagogical support
✓ insufficient time to learn new technologies or integrate ICT during a class
period
✓ Lack of funds for operations and maintenance
✓ unavailability of ICT resources or materials in school in which ICT trainers
were found difficulty to realize the knowledge and skills gained in trainings

Source: http://www.ijern.com/journal/2018/September-2018/13.pdf

Multiple Intelligences

✓ challenges in the implementation of multiple intelligence in the curriculum

✓ assessme nts of students and problems along with the instructions which are
tailored for diverse learning
✓ preparation of individualized or differentiated instructions

s-of-Implementin
g-Multiple-Intelligenc
e-in-the-
Curriculum/

Children with special needs

19
✓ Lack of teacher’s training in handling children with special needs
✓ Lack of competence
✓ Lack of concrete materials
✓ Assessment and evidence of student growth
✓ Collaborating with general education teachers
✓ Variability of students’ needs
✓ Lack of experience in an inclusion setting
✓ Lack of experience dealing with severe and profound disabilities
✓ Individualized lesson plans
✓ Dealing with parents of “typically developing” students
✓ Dealing with multiple disabilities

Do this: Write a single summary sentence that answers the what, why and how about
the topic “Challenges in Teaching”.

It is quite challenging but will get along to the victory of accepting

the differences and deals with imperfections which definitely leads to
success if we continue to spread knowledge and wisdom behind those
challenges and hardships. .

Application: Let’s Apply

A. Direction: Write a short article about how the information on challenges in

teaching applies to your major field/specialization?

A very interesting part of studying at this major is dealing with

those skills which is not suitable for girls like me and so likely to deal
with. Having back jobs and doubts in my specialization I could say “this
is a tough and rough ride “towards my dreams.

This specialization deals so much with life skills and honestly

mostly students enrolled for this course are left-out from other courses

20
and the one who doesn’t pass the scast .That’s why I can say that some of
this students have problems in understanding some words and has
difficulty in adjusting for this course. There would be a lot of unfamiliar
words and the job and works would be surprise for them.

This struggles would be enough to take actions for students.

Solutions would be applied so that this problems would be addressed and
everyone would can get along with this hardships and difficulties.

B. Today I learned that

The least exciting part of being a teacher is dealing with the problems that
is attached to this “challenges in teaching “it is hard for teachers to address each
of this challenges but at least there is always a possible solutions which makes a
challenge a sweet thing to embrace with.
