expressions.
3. Show appreciation in working with
group activity.

3. LESSON PROPER

Evaluate Algebraic Expressions

Yes, Ma'am!
To evaluate an algebraic expression
means to find the value of the expression
when the variable is replaced by a given
number. To evaluate an expression, we
substitute the given number for the
variable in the expression and then
simplify the expression using the order of
operations.

EXAMPLE 1:

y = 4x - 6 x=4

Solution:

y = 4x - 6

= 4 (4) - 6

= 16 - 6
y = 10

EXAMPLE 2:

y = 2x² + 7x - 4 x=2

Solution:

y = 2x² + 7x - 4

= 2 (2)² + 7(2) - 4

= 8 + 14 - 4

y = 18

EXAMPLE 3:

y = 2c³ + 6c + 2 c = 4

Solution:

y = 2c³ + 6c + 2

= 2 (4)³ + 6(4) + 2

= 2(64) + 18 + 2

= 128 + 18 + 2

y = 148

D. EXPLORE

Group Activity: I will group you into 5, lets

count starting from you ________.

Go to your respective group.

Answer this activity about Algebraic

Expressions. I will give you 5 minutes to
answer and afterwards I will call someone
from every group to write and explain their
answer in front.

Is it clear?

1. y = 4x² - 8x + 6 x=3

2. y = 6x³ - 8x² + 10x - 7 x=2

= 108 - 24 + 6

y = 90

Correct!

Mr. De Ade for number 3 2. y = 6x³ - 8x² + 10x - 7 x=2

= 6(2)³ - 8(2)² + 10(2) - 7

Very good! = 48 - 32 + 20 - 7

Mr. Villanueva explain your answer for y = 31

number 4
3. y = x⁴ + 7x³ - 6x² + 3x -9 x= 1

= (1)⁴ + 7(1)³ - 6(1)² + 3(1) - 9

Very good!

4. y = x³ + 7x² + 9 x=2

= (2)³ + 7(2)² + 9
Okay, thank you!
= 8 + 28 + 9
Is it clear class?
y = 45
Very Good!
5. y = 6x + 12 x=5
E. EXPLAIN
= 6(5) + 12
Let's now define the four types of
y = 42
algebraic expressions Yes Ma'am!

A monomial is an algebraic expression

with only one term in which the exponents
and variables are non-negative integers.

Examples of Monomials:

1.y = a, a is a monomial in one variable a.

a = 10

Solution:

y = 10

2. y = 10ab2 is a monomial in two

variables a and b.

a=2

b=4

Solution:

y = 10(2)(4)(2)

= 160

3. y = 5m2n is a monomial in two

variables m and n.

m=4

n=6

Solution:

y = 5(4) 2 (6)

= 240

4. y = -7pq is a monomial in two variables

p and q.

p = -2

q=1

Solution:

y = -7pq

= -7 (-2) (1)

y = 14

A binomial is an algebraic expression

composed of two monomials linked by an
operation symbol.

Examples of binomials:

1. m + n is a binomial in two variables m

and n.

m=6

n=4

Solution:

y=m+n

=6+4

y = 10

2. y = a² + 2b is a binomial in two
variables a and b.

a=4

b=3

Solution:

y = a2 + 2b

= (4)² + 2 (3)

y = 22

3. y = 5x³ – 9y² is a binomial in two

variables x and y.

x=2

y=4

Solution:

y = 5x³ - 9y²

= 5 (2)³ - 9 (4)²

= 5 (8) - 9(16)

= 40 - 114

y = -74

Is it clear?
Very good!

Try to answer example no. 4

4. y = b³/2 + c/3 is a binomial in two

variables b and c.
Yes ma'am!
b=2

c=9

( Everyone )

Solution:
Very Good!
y = (2)³/2 + 9/3

= 8/2 + 3
A trinomial consists of three monomials
linked by operation symbols. =4+3

Examples of trinomial: y=7

1. y = x + y + z is a trinomial in three
variables x, y and z.

x=2

y=4

z=6

Solution:

y=x+y+z

=2+4+6

y = 12

2. y = 2a² + 5a + 7 is a trinomial in one

variables a.

a=2

Solution:

y = 2a² + 5a + 7

= 2(2)² + 5(2) + 7

y = 25

3. s = xy + x + 2y² is a trinomial in two

variables x and y.

x=4

y=1

Solution:

s = xy + x + 2y²

= 4 (1) + 4 + 2(1)²

=4+4+2

s = 10

4. y = 5abc – 7ab + 9ac is a trinomial in

three variables a, b and c.

a=1

b=2

c=3

Solution:

y = 5abc – 7ab + 9ac

= 5 (1)(2)(3) - 7(1)(2) + 9(1)(3)

= 30 - 14 + 27

y = 43

A polynomial is an algebraic expression

with any amount of terms greater than 1
but not an infinite amount

Examples of polynomials:

1. y = 2a + 5b is a polynomial of two terms

in two variables a and b.

a=3

b=4

Solution:

y = 2a + 5b

= 2(3) + 5(4)

y = 26

2. s = 3xy + 5x + 1 is a polynomial of three

terms in two variables x and y.

x=5

y=3

Solution:

s = 3xy + 5x + 1

= 3(5)(3) + 5(5) + 1

= 45 + 25 + 1

s = 71

3. y = m + 5mn – 7m²n + nm² + 9 is a

polynomial of four terms in two variables
m and n.

m=2
n=5
Solution:
y = m + 5mn – 7m²n + nm² + 9
= 2 + 5(2)(5) - 7(2)²(5) + 5(2)² + 9
= 2 + 50 - 200 + 20 + 9
y = - 119
