Comm 318 Team Norms and Expectations for Peak Performance

Team Members will fill out this form and keep it in your binder all quarter.

Certain behaviors frequently create problems for groups/teams. To counter this, your team will
create norms/expectations that will encourage a positive learning experience and help hold each
other accountable. Later in the quarter your team will revisit these as you prepare for your final
presentations. If difficulties arise within your team, these will be consulted. I will review these
and sign off on them, then each team member will sign them and return them to your binder for
later reference.

Use the following questions to guide your norm creation:

1. Please discuss these prompts:

· What are each team member’s expectations for this course?
· What do you hope to get out of interacting with your peers?
· Share your reservations and prior experiences with group work. How do
you hope to address these issues should they arise within your team this quarter?

2. Please answer these questions:

● What are three (3) goals we can set for ourselves this quarter?
1. Passing the class with a good grade
2. Working along together as one group.
3. Catching up with the assignments and getting the best grade.

● How can we share the work equally?

Prioritizing the interest and the ability of each person to split the work equally.

● How are we going to make decisions? Particularly when dividing the work?
We first discuss making an outline and definition of the roles. Then, we pick the
roles in the group chat or the meeting based on our member’s abilities.

● Will we attempt to meet out of class? How/when?

Yes, we will have a meeting right after the class or have a zoom meeting. We will
keep in touch in the group chat.

● How will we inform each other if we are running late or absent from class
and/or team meetings?
We will inform each other ahead of time for any conflict situation through the
group chat.
● In addition to notifying the professor, what is a fair and equitable way we
will deal with a chronically absent or undern-participating team member?
Contacting the members first, trying to be patient and understanding of whatever
happened with them. If they don’t respond in several days, we will contact the
professor.

● How will we deal with a member who over-participates? (continued on next

page)
We check what we have done once per week in the group chat or meeting. If
someone has trouble catching up or overworks, we will help or steal their work.

● How should we deal with a member who distracts the team/class? What can
we do to stay focused in class and meetings?
We set up the meeting to remind and explain the purpose of the meeting and the
goal-result of our work.

● 3. Your signatures indicate that you have individually and collectively

agreed to the above norms.

4. How to Benefit from teamwork: You will be working with a team of 3-4 people
all quarter during class assignments and the final team presentation. To work effectively,
however every member of your team needs to contribute. If a member misses a class or
scheduled meeting or fails to contribute on a team assignment, that person will not earn
points for the assignment, or will have to make up the work individually. You will have
the opportunity to anonymously let me know that you are having a problem with your
team through an online survey.

5. Read through this table as a team to get an idea of how to benefit from team
work as well as be ready to “fire” a team member who is not cooperating.
